(8/6/07) - Hot Fuzz: 7/10 - A few good laguhs here and there, with chuckels throughout the rest. I enjoyed this, but I couldn't help but thinking to myself that I enjoyed Shaurn Of The Dead so much more. Although it was directed very tightly (and well in fact). Looking forward to seeing what these guys do next, it seems they do have a great sense of humour.
(8/8/07) - Fall: 8/10 - A very well-written and well-acted portrayal of intimacy between two lustful lovers.
(8/9/07) - The Beatles Anthology: 10/10 - An absolute colasal treat for any Beatles fan. Incredibly informative and entertaining.
(8/10/07) - The Host: 9/10 - Sure, it is indeed in fact a "Monster Movie," but it's a wildly gripping, very smart, beautifully shot, shotgunblast of a "Monster Movie." It's being compared to Jaws a lot... but it reminded me more of some of the best moments from Jurassic Park. <---Either way, great flick.
(8/12/07) - The Man Without A Face: 6/10 - Not bad, but not exactly great either. Comes off as a little overshadowed next to Mel's other (and much better) efforts.
(8/14/07) - The Number 23: 4/10 - Interesting idea, but hardly comes off as even mildly creepy. Some of the directing decisions were well done and Carrey was great as he always is, but as the movie kept going, I just became more and more disappointed since this movie (at least I thought) had potential. Couldn't finish it.
(8/14/07) - Waking Life: 8/10 - Stunning animation, asks a few interesting questions, but it also asks a number of shallow ones (for this film) as well. The free will dialogue was interesting and a piece of the movie that stuck out for me. And being a fairly bizarre dreamer myself, I enjoyed it.

2- The Wind That Shakes The Barley (limited) ***1/2 - I saw it with a live orchestra, so I think the experience was a bit better then it will be when it hits mainstream theatre. Either way a very good film and I've never been a fan of Loach's

9- The Host *** - Doesn't live up to the hype surrounding it. More of a comedy then
horror film, and I'm not sure why they'd release this version theatrically when the remake is coming 2008!? Oh well, the DVD will cost the same as a ticket, so do that and re-sell it.

23- Angel-A ** - Eh? Besson what went wrong? Everything about this movie had me excited until I saw it. Imagine King Kong, but instead of a Monkey we get a 7 foot Blonde. I don't know, I hoped for more with this one. Was pretty to look at!

30- Rescue Dawn **** - I like Herzog, and after Batman I became a Bale fan. I went in with high hopes, and came out happy. This could give Herzog a mainstream audience

APRIL

6- Severance **** - The first question I asked after I saw this was "why isn't this coming out in America!?"....well, I got my wish! A hillarious movie with the violence of Hostel. Fantastic movie. The guy from the Football Factory does an AMAZING job in this film.

JULY

27- El Cantante - ***1/2 - Who would ever think I'd let a J-Lo movie pass? Well, she deserves it for this one. I'll admit that being a record/lp collector finding out it was a Fania Records bio-pic makes me a bit biased, but J-Lo offers the best performance of her career. Extra credit for it being a Spanish Language film, not a cop-out English movie. It was a movie I forced myself to watch, but after was happy I selected. Not sure why they're taking so long to bring it out. The print they played in September up here was fine IMO.

Ghosts of Cité Soleil (SONY PICTURES) ***** - It's not on the release list yet, but I've got personal e-mails from the Director telling me it'll be out in 2007 for sure via Sony Pictures. I tried to buy this movie after I saw the premiere. Imagine a Reality TV version of City of God. I predict before 2007 ends, people will be all over this one!!!

01. Freedom Writers - ***
While offering nothing unique, and showing far less grit than the story probably demands, the film ultimately overwhelms the emotions with the moving performances of the students, mostly played by unknowns and/or unprofessionals. There is also something to be said for Hilary Swank's slightly overwrought performance, which unapologically maintains the kind of hip street cred that only a privileged, white teacher would have in this environment; in other words, none. Despite the easy characterizations of the "bad" teachers in the school, the film had at least 4 or 5 misty-eyed moments. The kind of movie you won't seek out but are glad once you've seen it.
