He can play the romantic leading man (C'est la vie, mon chéri) or the confused "what's the hell has happened to me" role (The Victim) w/ equal adeptness. The one major thing he's lacking is that I don't believe he speaks english (or atleast not well enough to make it here in the US)... that and the aforementioned trend of just doing comedies.
That's not to detract from Christian Bale though as I've usually enjoyed his stuff as well.

Before Bale was ever announced to be The Dark Knight, he was my first choice to be the next James Bond. He would have been perfect. Am I the only one who thinks this?

Bale may not be up there with Oldman(who i agree is an acting GOD) and others but he is definitly an up an cummer and a jack of all trades when it comes to acting. Highly underrated actor until Batman Begins(even with that he may well still be underrated). I'm another one who never jumped on the Phillip Seymore Hoffman wagon. Maybe because he was in which in my opinion is probably one of the worst(though highly-praised)films ever, Happiness. Plus, he was the worst thing in "Along Came Polly" which is saying something when you're talking about that bad of a film.
To get back on topic I think Bale will become one of the greatest in Hollywood.
note:I am in no way saying the negative remarks about Happiness to start an argument or to be a troll, I know it is very popular on this board, I just found no redeemable qualities in that film whatsoever. And being that people brought up PSH, i thought it was relevent to the topic.

How many of the ones mentioned have done a good comedy?
Brad Pitt's got some different roles in his film resume.

I'm going to add Russell Crowe....from one movie to the next, the guys amazing and changes up his performances...but definitely I think Gary Oldman is one of the best at being completely versatile...

I think Christian Bale is a great actor, I think he is a big reason for how much I enjoyed American Psycho and Batman Begins. But even though he pulled off some dark comedy in American Psycho, I am not sure if he would pull off a more light hearted comedy (unless he has already done one that I am not aware of).
