Cuts to original NC-17 release of "The Libertine" for wide R?

I saw an ad in the paper today for an R-rated cut of "The Libertine". I know it played in LA in December with an NC-17 rating. Does anybody know what was cut for the re-release?

As far as I know, the flick had too much "graphic sexuality and nudity."

You can never have too much graphic sexuality and nudity, especially with regards to Johnny Depp.

Seriously though, I'm going to see this movie in about two hours. Has anyone else seen it?

I'm actually quite psyched about this, even though reviews have been mixed. I did a production of the original play a few years ago and it's an amazingly dark, well-written piece.

Okay, this time I'm wrong. The nudity and sex were more than a little offputting. The movie has seriously weirded me out. Johnny did a fantastic job and was really stretched as an actor, and the film itself was well executed. Mostly. But overall the film made me cringe. A lot.

Not sure if I liked it. I don't hate it. All I can say is "Wow" at Johnny's performance. I mean, he's a great actor, but most of the time I sit there and say "Yep, that's Johnny" but it almost didn't seem like him through most of this film. Very odd.

I never heard that this film received or was released with a NC-17 rating.

I am surprised that the Weinstein Co. actually released this after savage negative reviews from last year.

The film got the savage reviews. For the most part, the actors did not.

Frankly, I don't ever want to see the movie again. I'm not even sure I'm glad to have seen it. All I can say is I'm glad I didn't pay for the tickets. I won tickets at Safeway. Or something.

It was released in LA in December with an NC-17 in time to qualify for the Oscars.

It just tells you how bad the thing was when nobody even noticed it.

Oy.

I never said it played New York as NC-17.

I know an NC-17 cut played LA at the end of December. It's natural to assume that it plaed NY also, but if you get Time Out New York and never noticed it than maybe it didn't. Did you see any ads for it playing in NY in December at all?

and I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just surprised I didn't note this, since I take interest in films that buck the MPAA trend and either get released with a NC-17 rating or of equal "unrated" 'adult' content. I could have sworn I saw ads for this in TONY, oh well...

Could there be two cuts of the movie out now?

but even if the film was officially released with a NC-17, the MPAA's database should and would have denoted this, yet it isn't:

Title: Libertine, The (2005)
Rating: R
Rating Reason: Rated R for strong sexuality including dialogue, violence and language.
Distributor: Weinstein Company, LLC, The
Alternate Titles: Liberty, The

now back up - what's the running time of this film.

the BBFC states it

When submitted to the BBFC the work had a running time of 114m 3s.

yet IMDB states the US running time is 130 minutes

Runtime: 114 min / USA:130 min

now I'm really confused

If a film is released as NC-17 and then cut and resubmitted for an R, would the MPAA have two listings for it or just the latest (R)?

technically there should be two, but the MPAA's database isn't well navigatable, so ... it's any one's guess.

Did you see my post about the Regal in Battery Park listing an NC-17 version on their website? Are you able to confirm or refute that in local newspaper listings?

well, after wasting around forty five minutes of my time, I think there are: an unrated version and an official MPAA approved R-rated cut.

The theatre listings are ALL inconsistent: in both running time and rating: 114min with R-rating, the 130min version including and not including an R-rating (in some cases, an unofficial MPAA NC-17 rating or even a NR: no rating)

Even Ebert's online review states it has no rating (the 114min cut)

http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/...603090303/1023

Rotten Tomatoes listing has the 114min version carrying the R-rating.

Update:

This movie did get threatened with a NC-17 rating, but never officially accepted it. The Weinstein's did comply and cut the film since it's in the MPAA database, but as to which version which theatre got, you've got me...

the current Fandango listings for the DC engagements don't have a rating at all - just a 'NR'. Refer to my comments regarding what I think is going on with release one posting up.

here's a little more on the subject

Weinstein will release Libertine unrated

yet it does nothing to explain why there appears to be two cuts of the film floating around. It's quite possible that the theatres that are showing the film are incorrectly posting a wrong running time.

Hmm. That all makes sense. I'm certain that the ads that I saw (in LA) said NC-17, but maybe the theatre placing the ad screwed up and meant unrated. Or maybe the add was signed off on before the Weinstein's turned down the NC-17.

Thanks for tracking that down.

Michael Medved reviewed the film and he said the movie did get an MPAA R rating, probably based on the shorter 114-minute version. While he said the movie was quite unpleasant to watch he did say that Johnny Depp did have a very fine acting performance in that film.

I wouldn't be surprised that when Libertine arrives on DVD (probably by July 2006 timeframe) we'll see the uncut 130-minute version.

but that's the problem here, there is conflicting information floating around that 114 minute is both unrated and R-rated. The inclusion of the MPAA's rating for the film in it's database, confirms that the film has in fact been rated and cut, but in some cases reviewers and websites denote that the 114 minute doesn't have a rating.

Who else has seen this? Is there really a 130 minute version floating around?
