Does anybody know what a typical percentage drop in first to second week grosses would be?

In today's cinema, 50% drop in the second weekend is becoming the norm, with some exceptions. Most of these movies open huge, and then lose half their business in the second week before sailing off into the sunset. Star Wars was extremely front loaded, so you'd expect it to fall that much. A movie such as "Hitch", which had great legs for the box office, only dropped 27% in it's second weekend and never dropped at 50%. But it doesn't happen as much as it used to, especially because of dvd.

50% drops are fairly normal, and considering the absolutely enormous opening of Star Wars (a film which is no doubt frontloaded) a 50% drop or slightly less isn't that bad at all.

As for Sandler vs. Sith...Sith made 20.7 on saturday, whereas TLY pulled in around 17.5. Madagascar with about 18 or so, which means it looks like Sith will pull a number one for the weekend. It'll be close with three films all making major bucks this weekend.

Looks like Sandler gave Sith a pretty big blow, a 70% drop. That's pretty steep
