What happens to movie props/clothing/sets etc when the movies over?

I just got thinking, out of curiousity, what happens to everything when the movies done shooting. I mean, I'm not talking about the Batmobile or Superman's cape, famous things like that. Just regular props, costumes, whatever. Does that stuff just get thrown out, stolen by the stars, what?

Most go back to the props department to get recycled or stored away. Many get auctioned off and go to Planet Hollywood's in who knows where.

During the heyday of the studios, they often performed "encores" in subsequent films.

Part of Atlanta that is burning in Gone With The Wind is actually that big wooden jungle barricade fence from King Kong, and on the new Bandwagon release, the commentary points out recycled sets and costumes from American In Paris.

Sometimes wardrobe gets sold off. Either to specialty shops that resell them or from the wardrobe department. I've picked up scrubs and cammies pretty cheap that way.

I almost got the jacket that Mark Wahlberg wore in The Big Hit.

There are some secondhand stores around LA that end up with a lot of the wardrobe from indie productions.

I'm sure most gets sent back to props/wardrobe to be used again, especially for movies set in the present and there is nothing unique about it. I'm sure there is no demand for most of it. Is anyone out there really interested in the toaster seen in the background in some movie? Probably not.

However, props in some movies (LOTR, SW) all get saved by the production company and stored except for a few things that get sold or stolen. These props are things that people would pay for ANYTHING in the movie. Some book on Bilbo's shelf or a glass on SW's Cantina's bar. I remember some auction a few years ago that was selling a computer buttons on a side of a door in the old star wars movie for big bucks.

Sometimes the cast get to take the stuff or atleast first shot if they want anything. I remember hearing that on some sets like Sex and the City, the cast were offered the clothes. Some took them, some sold them for charity.

THe more unique movie props from niche films would be quite an impressive display. Not sure what you could do with costumes unless you like to dress up as the characters as you watch the film and act it out. (Rocky Horror anyone? )
