New Year. New Films. A Lot More Shit.

The Rules of Matthew Chmiel's 2005 Rank Them As You See Them

1. If a film gets an official theatrical release in the United States during the year of 2005, it is counted towards the list.

2. If a film skips an official theatrical release in the United States and ends up going directly to video in 2005, it is still counted towards the list.

3. Each film is listed in the following set-up:
Title / star rating / MPAA rating / director / viewed / theater code.

4. Theater codes are at the moment as follows: Century Theaters Orleans 18 (OR), Century Theaters Suncoast 16 (SC), Brendan Theaters Palms 14 (BT), Regal Cinemas Village Square 18 (VS), Regal Cinemas Colonade 14 (CO), Tropicana Cinemas 6 (TC), Crown Theaters Neonopolis 14 (CT), Regal Cinemas Sunset Station 13 (SS), Regal Cinemas Green Valley Ranch 10 (GV), Century Theaters Sam's Town 18 (ST), and home (H). Of course, most locations will not be used, but are here for reference.

2005 first page goodness:

**** -
***' -
*** -
**' - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Too much of the movie didn't translate very well from the book's narration and that kept the humor way down. Parts were funny, but overall couldn't compare to the book. Mos Def was awesome.
** - Meet the Fockers. Parts were laugh-out-loud hilarious, but most of it was "smile inwardly" type of funny. Too predictable. Dustin Hoffman was awesome, though.

Hostage 4/10
It was a little to by the book, but that book would have to be some kind of reader's digest with half a dozen hack movies condensed into one.

Constantine 6/10
Seemed to have potential, but as a non-fan I felt a bit lost. I hear fans aren't very pleased with some elements either, so I wonder who this film was made for?

Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith 7/10
All the flaws from the first two are still here, but the trilogy was so badly paced that much of the action was stuffed into this one. Since that's really the only appeal left in the series it makes this movie the best of the prequels.

Steamboy 8/10
A very accessible anime for western audiences and extraordinarily beautiful artwork.

Sin City 8/10
Excellent eye candy and love the pulp/noir vibe. Still, several performances were off and something in the editing/pacing/direction threw me out of the film at times. I saw it a few weeks ago, so I can't be more specific.

Robots 4/10
They type of film that makes you wonder why they would put so much time/money/effort into making a film around such a steaming pile of a script.

Mr & Mrs Smith 7/10
Pitt and Jolie's chemistry make up for some poor plot points, but a decent ending would have been nice.

Unleashed 3/10
Perhaps it's unfair to rate a movie after walking out halfway thru, but somehow I feel I'm still the more injured party.

Kung-Fu Hustle 8/10
Like Sholin Soccer it's a great eye candy movie.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy 6/10

Kingdom of Heaven 5/10

Batman Begins 7/10

War of the Worlds 7/10

Fantastic Four 5/10

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 8/10

Sky High 7/10

I'm probably only going to see a handful this year, but that'll still be more than last year.

I'm taking it one step further and providing a spoiler free quick glimpse of the film.

1.

1. In good company - Topher grace delivers a pretty decent performance and Dennis Quaid really does show some acting skill here. Both show their age and is a good flick over all. The real pleasure of this film is seeing Scarlett Johansson on screen. The story is of the senior worker being replaced by the new young gun when a magazine company is bought out by a bigger company and how the characters deal with it. I really enjoyed the ending unless they changed it since the project was called synergy.

Constantine - Drastic departure from the comic book (Hellblazer) and has the worse ending.
Spoiler:
He gives up smoking
The only saving grace to this film is the good special effects on the demons and a couple of comic references from story arcs.

Ranking system
worst 1-10 best

Here we go
1. House of Flying Daggers 1.14.05 gets a seven...didn't live up to the hype. but still worth a watch. Saw it with a friend who saw it at Cannes said the extra twenty minutes were missed. Enjoyed it, but nothing to scream about.

2. Sin City 04.01.05 and 04.08.05 gets a 10. Fell right into this one. Loved the look, the feel, the story, the violence.

3. Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith 05.19.05 8 Loved it, best of the prequals, but glad to lay it to rest.

4. War of the Worlds 07.02.05 6 Good way to kill 2 hours, but nothing to write home about.

5. Batman Begins 07.03.05 8 Just about everything I wanted it to be. Ninjas and Monster makeup were great.

6. Fantastic Four 07.09.05 4 still better than I hoped for, but Doom just didn't do it for me.

7. The Island 07.30.05 just blah...better than being at work...didn't hate it, didn't love it. Felt repetitive.

8. The Brothers Grimm 08.27.05 Blah...again it felt good to sit down, and it looked cool. Didn't hate it, didn't love it.

9. Red Eye 09.01.05 6 I liked this movie. It felt like some of the story was missing though...hoping for an uncut dvd.

10. Alien 10.01.05 still a 10 after all these years. The print was crap, but I enjoyed it all the same.

11. Wallace & Gromit Curse of the Were Rabbit 10.14.05

12. Run Lola Run 11.26.05

13. King Kong 12.14.05

14. Syriana 12.18.05

15. Munich 12.25.05
