"100 movies that deserve love"

Did anyone ever come across this article from CHUD earlier in the year? I had already agreed with many of their selections, but there were quite a few that I never got around to see (Like To Live and Die in L.A. & Devil's Backbone) but after a few months, I did my homework and managed to catch a couple of nice little gems. What a dumb list. Who cares? Shouldn't this say "a list of movies I like that I don't think others care about"?

Re: "100 movies that deserve love"

1. A Simple Plan - Interesting and well-acted movie.
3. Mr. Frost - Is this the one with Jeff Goldblum as Satan?
7. The Arrival - Charlie Sheen uncovers an alien plot. Not good.
8. Time After Time - Oh hell yes. H.G. Wells chasing Jack the Ripper around 1979 San Francisco (IIRC)? Great movie.
13. Deep Rising - Not original, but a decent Aliens ripoff.
16. The Blob - The 1988 version is even better than the Steve McQueen version.
17. Contact - A long way to go for very little payoff.
18. No Escape - Yuck.
20. Alien 3 - The weakest of the four.
22. Young Sherlock Holmes - Another good one.
23. She’s The One - No, she's not.
24. The Cable Guy - Somewhat funny.
31. Fright Night - Classic 80s vampire flick.
34. Cop Land - Good movie.
35. The Edge - This really bombed, but I liked it a lot.
37. Miami Blues - Not great.
38. The Peacemaker - Ahem, I was in this movie, so of course it's great. *bows*
39. Ronin - Greatest car chase in history.
40. Die Hard 2: Die Harder - I used to love this film, but now I can't stand it. Weird.
41. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - Certainly nowhere close to RotLA, but a good action flick.
45. Nighthawks - "You're fucking DEAD! You're fucking DEAD!"
46. King of New York - Walken, before he went nuts, is okay with me.
47. Heaven Help Us - Lame 80s teen sex comedy.
50. Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey - Pass.
51. Universal Soldier - Not good.
52. In The Line of Fire - Excellent.
58. Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead - Off-beat, but serviceable.
59. Rounders - One of my favorite movies of all time.
62. Stir of Echoes - Nifty ghost story.
70. 25th Hour - Spike Lee's best.
71. Jackie Brown - Quention Tarantino's least.
74. Casino - Not a ripoff of Goodfellas, this stands on its own.
76. A Perfect World - What a yawner.
77. The Rules of Attraction - Terrible. I was stupider for having watched.
78. Point Break - Classic!
87. Candyman - Middling horror.
88. Last Boy Scout - Silly action, but a lot of fun.
93. Pump Up The Volume - Turn it down, please.
94. Kissing Jessica Stein - I *heart* lesbians, although there's not much nooditity.
96. Southern Comfort - Those bayou inbreds sure know their way around a swamp.
99. Breakdown - Feh.
100. Falling Down - Could've been excellent.

Re: "100 movies that deserve love"

The ons I've seen:

1. A Simple Plan- ok, not great
2. In the Mouth of Madness- terrible
7. The Arrival- awful
9. Brotherhood of the Wolf- a little pretentious, but fun
10. Gattaca- overrated and a little silly
17. Contact- terrific and underrated
21. The Iron Giant- unsung classic
22. Young Sherlock Holmes- very underrated, IMO
24. The Cable Guy- better than you'd think but not great
25. The Ref- very funny and underrated
28. Top Secret!- easily as funny as Airplane! and crazier
29. Antz- not too good, IMO
30. Atlantis: The Lost Empire- cool looking but the script is a mess
32. Long Kiss Goodnight- silly La Femme Nikita/Bourne Identy hybrid, not very memorable
35. The Edge- I really liked this one, it's beautiful and underrated, IMO
38. The Peacemaker- pretty good
39. Ronin- a few flaws, but overall terrific. One of the better recent crime thrillers
40. Die Hard 2: Die Harder- plot holes and idiocy galore, yuck.
41. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom- I can see how people wouldn't like it, but I did. In fact, I think it's great.
42. To Live and Die in LA- very 80s, but pretty solid with a nice twist at the end.
43. James and the Giant Peach- excellent and better than "Nightmare Before Christmas", IMO
48. LA Story- terrific offbeat romantic comedy. I really like this one.
50. Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey- a mess but a funny mess. The scenes with the Grim Reaper are classic.
51. Universal Soldier - sucks ass, doesn't belong here
52. In The Line of Fire- damn good movie, but a little formulaic
55. One False Move- excellent movie and very underrated.
56. The Money Pit- one of the better high concept comedies of the 80s, IMO.
59. Rounders- good, but not great. Ed Norton is greta in it, though.
65. The Mosquito Coast- very unique and memorable. Underrated.
66. Ed Wood- absolutely wonderful. Great movie and completely forgotten. Martin Landau and Depp are both terrific.
68. Big Night - a minor classic. Tony Shaloub is a completely wasted actor usually, not here.
69. A Midnight Clear - pretty good, but no SPR.
71. Jackie Brown- better than I thought it would be, but it's not Pulp Fiction
74. Casino- really good, but really long. The first 20 minutes might be the best 20 minutes in any Scocese film. And then Sharon Stone is introduced. Blech.
75. Clean and Sober - pretty good movie. Keaton is also an undervalued actor.
78. Point Break- terrific and very silly. I really liked it.
93. Pump Up The Volume- good late-80s teen drama, but not terrific.

As stupid as this post is, there is actually some truth to it. Anybody could probably put together a similar list.

With that said, its an interesting list, with some decent choices. But, isn't "Nothing to Lose" that movie with Martin Lawrence and Tim Robbins? That was one of the worst comedies I've ever seen.

No, his character's name was Worm.

See what I did there?

Another unsung movie that deserves a lot of respect: Rock Star, with Mark Wahlberg.
It totally tanked at the b.o., but if you were a fan of rock in the 80s, this is an absolute gem.

I hope everyone goes to the article linked in the first post. The rationales for the choices are both more fun and more persuasive than the negative responses. Thanks OP.

A Simple Plan - Brilliant!
Iron Giant - Brilliant
In the Mouth of Madness & Candyman - fun flicks, coincidentally the only two that still creep me out
The Arrival - fun as well, definitely underrated
Frequency & Contact are excellent sci-fi films
Point Break - surfing/skydiving bank robbers, what's not to love?
Beautiful Girls - great

I've seen quite a few more but there is one on that list that has eluded me and I have been dying to check out, Gattaca.

Yes, please do. The descriptions are (often) right on the mark. 25th Hour couldn't have been said better.

Agreed. I never get sick of Money Pit and One False Move is seriously strong stuff. It did introduce me to Billy Bob so that's gotta mean something right?

Agreed. This seems to air on the USA or SCI-FI channel every weekend afternoon and I always have to stop and watch *at least* a half hour of it. Clever little flick.

Re: "100 movies that deserve love"

Those I've seen:

5. In the Mouth of Madness: Excellent suspense scenes. Captures the H.P. Lovecraft spirit and mocks it at the same time. Great acting. Seems to be lacking a third act, unfortunately.
7. The Arrival: Not bad for a film with Whatshisname in it.
9. Brotherhood of the Wolf: Rocks! (Despite the presence of the simpering reigning Whore of Babylon playing herself)
11. Dragonslayer: Saw it. Forgot.
13. Deep Rising: Great moments but forgettable and formulaic.
14. Mouse Hunt: An all-time classic.
15. Space Truckers: Rocks! (But I didn't like the reviewer dissing "The Fifth Element" to make his point, though.)
17. Contact: An all-time classic.
20. Alien 3: They're all great.
21. The Iron Giant: An all-time classic.
24. The Cable Guy: Worthy.
25. The Ref: Very good.
29. Antz : Which one of the two was it? They both had their charm. (The other being "A Bug's Life".)
30. Atlantis: The Lost Empire : Bought it for the DTS sound. Hate it for its over-the-top, inappropriate violence (the body count is in the hundreds of thousands if you count the intro), its glorification of the criminal lifestyle, its cynical, mouthy, clichéed characters, its open racism against the French, its shameless kow-towing to the Tarantino generation and its sexist and colonial attitudes. Great animation though, the dying embers of traditional animation at Disney. I can see why some people like it a lot. Nevertheless, the death of heart and good taste in children's programming.
37. Miami Blues: A lot funnier and believable than Tarantino and didn't cause me to vomit uncontrollably like a QT film, which is always a good sign. "Finely obsoived", as the Mafiosi on "The Simpsons" used to say.
40. Die Hard 2: Die Harder: Formulaic.
41. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom: Not bad.
48. L.A. Story: Memorable and quotable.
51. Universal Soldier: Great shots of Van Damme's butt. No, seriously!
54. Shadow of the Vampire: Horrible, but not in the way it was intended. Not even respectful of its subject. A total waste of time, especially for film buffs. [Hint: None of the real "Nosferatu"'s scenes were filmed at night.]
56. The Money Pit : All-time classic comedy.
62. Stir of Echoes: Good and satisfying.
64. Hollywood Shuffle: I was impressed and I learned something.
66. Ed Wood: All hype, no substance.
68. Big Night : Nice "little" film.
72. Super Troopers : Truly memorable toilet humour.
80. A Knight's Tale: There's no excuse for this kind of ignorant/hip anachronism. It was worst than "Gladiator" (although a lot less depressing).
82. Testament: Required viewing for anyone who thinks of voting for George II... again.
83. Home for the Holidays: Not bad but can't hold a candle to "Stuart Saves His Family", in the same vein.
84. And The Band Played On: Great TV mini-series.
87. Candyman: Scary.
88. Last Boy Scout: I liked it.
89. Gods and Monsters: An all-time classic.
92. Gremlins 2 : Puhleeeeaasse...
95. The Prophecy: Blah... I even forgot I saw this tripe but I must admit it spurred a truly major trend in pop-cultural Catholic theology, most notably in the excellent - although racist against the French - comic book series "Preacher" (1996-2000), Kevin Smith's "Dogma" (1999), John Carpenter's "Vampires" (1998) and countless lesser horrors, some of which even starred Al Pacino ("The Devil's Advocate") and Arnold ("End of Days").
98. The Hudsucker Proxy: Nonsensical, aimless and childish fluff, but pleasant enough to watch to the end.
100. Falling Down: An all-time classic.

6. Night Falls on Manhattan - Argree that this is a largely unwatched diamond.
7. The Arrival
8. Time After Time - Haven't seen it in forever, but remember enjoying.
10. Gattaca - Agree whole heartedly
14. Mouse Hunt - Not good. Has moments, but basicly a trainwreck of a movie.
16. The Blob - Cheesey horror goodness that gave me nightmares as a child. Agree.
17. Contact - Overblown and dull with a pandering ending.
19. Frequency - Agree
20. Alien 3 - God no. Maybe the origianl Fincher cut is better.
21. The Iron Giant - Classic
22. Young Sherlock Holmes - Haven't seen it in years but had a VHS for years. Agree.
23. She’s The One - Oh what a steaming pile. Disagree completely!
24. The Cable Guy - Yes! Comic masterpiece that will stand the test of time.
28. Top Secret! - Not bad, but not that funny either.
29. Antz - Agree!
31. Fright Night - Oh how I loved this movie! Great 80's horror movie. Agree!
32. Long Kiss Goodnight - Why was this movie not a hit? Fantastic action.
34. Cop Land - Agree. Should have been Sly's comeback.
37. Miami Blues- Not bad. Quirky funny.
39. Ronin - One great scene does not a great movie make.
40. Die Hard 2: Die Harder. Awful flick. JJ's dad is the bad guy? Come on.
41. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - Are you kidding me? Kate Capeshaw is a female Jar Jar.
43. James and the Giant Peach - Agree.
48. LA Story - Agree. Woody Allen in LA.
50. Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey - Oh my. Are you on drugs?
52. In The Line of Fire - Best mainstream suspense/drama in the last 10 years or so.
53. Liberty Heights - Levinson in top form.
54. Shadow of the Vampire

Oh... you were serious.

Man, I'm into '80's rock, but that film was so terribly stupid. John Stockwell's miserable script is the main fault, showhorning in as many tired "rise and fall" cliches as can be accomadated, with a poor by-the-numbers love story, and so on... it's just a bad movie.

What needed to be changed? The real story was good enough.

If I didn't include it, I haven't seen it.

1. A Simple Plan - Sam Raimi channels the Coen brothers with great success.
8. Time After Time - Sweet, but I don't remember it that fondly.
9. Brotherhood of the Wolf - Meh.
10. Gattaca - It was pretty, but quite empty, too.
11. Dragonslayer - I liked it when I saw it, years ago.
20. Alien 3 - possibly my favorite of the series (seriously)
22. Young Sherlock Holmes - yet another sweet movie.
23. She’s The One - A poor homage to John Hughes' career.
25. The Ref - Great, if onlly for Leary.
32. Long Kiss Goodnight - Samuel L. was great, but that's about it.
34. Cop Land - Stallone out acts De Niro? Can it be possible? Yes!
36. State of Grace - A fantastic film in every respect.
37. Miami Blues - Decent just about covers it.
39. Ronin - Good cast, nice car chase scene.
40. Die Hard 2: Die Harder - No.
41. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - Absolutely not.
42. To Live and Die in LA - Anything shot by Robby Müller is a work of art.
46. King of New York - Very good.
48. LA Story - Never got (into) it.
52. In The Line of Fire - It was alright.
54. Shadow of the Vampire - I really liked it.
56. The Money Pit - Yecch.
60. Birdy - Parker + Cage + Modine = Fantastic.
62. Stir of Echoes - Not much of a fan.
64. Hollywood Shuffle - I don't think it's aged well, IMO.
68. Big Night - A personal favorite.
70. 25th Hour - I think it's Lee's best film, and that's saying a lot.
71. Jackie Brown - I didn't like it.
74. Casino - Too long and not very interesting.
76. A Perfect World - Yet another great Eastwood film.
77. The Rules of Attraction - Hell no.
84. And The Band Played On - Another great Modine film.
86. Deterrence - A little hysterical in tone for me.
89. Gods and Monsters - Really quite good.

97. A Life Less Ordinary - Quite nice.
98. The Hudsucker Proxy - The Coen's first failure.

22. Young Sherlock Holmes - I thought it was ok the one time I saw it, but stupid--too many dumb effects

51. Universal Soldier - Another guilty pleasure
52. In The Line of Fire - OK, not great. Thought it was overrated when it came out.
55. One False Move - This is a great movie, everyone should see it (at least if you don't mind fairly extreme violence)

59. Rounders - Didn't like
60. Birdy - Another good but depressing movie.
64. Hollywood Shuffle - This is pretty funny
65. The Mosquito Coast - Good, but hard to watch

78. Point Break - I love this movie.
80. A Knight’s Tale - Not bad, not great, but not bad.
87. Candyman - One of my favorite horror movies, very atmospheric (but it's hardly unknown-Paperhouse is the one they should've had on the list)
93. Pump Up The Volume - I thought it was pretentious
94. Kissing Jessica Stein - Entertaining, stupid but entertaining
95. The Prophecy - I thought this movie was terrible
96. Southern Comfort - I can't remember this at all

Re: "100 movies that deserve love"

My thoughts on ones I've seen:

1. A Simple Plan - Can't count the amount of times I've seen this movie. It's the start of the current period in Sam Raimi's filmmaking career, and it just gets better with each viewing.

2. The Devil's Backbone - Love it. A much deeper film than I initially suspected.

5. In the Mouth of Madness - As an H.P. Lovecraft fan, I think John Carpenter did a really fantastic job of bringing Lovecraft's spirit to the film without getting bogged down in the problems that plague most other films based on actual Lovecraft stories.

7. The Arrival - Remember seeing this in the theater and thinking about how much better it was than most sci-fi in the mid to late 90's. Made me a David Twohy fan.

8. Time After Time - Good fun.

9. Brotherhood of the Wolf - Amazingly overrated. Couldn't stand it.

10. Gattaca - Easily one of the best science fiction films of the 90's. Fantastic performances, visuals, and themes. A modern classic.

12. Equilibrium - Haven't seen it, but I've heard great things about it.

14. Mouse Hunt - This is an odd choice. It was fun, but nothing incredibly special.

16. The Blob - Do they mean the original or the remake?

17. Contact - Easily one of the worst science fiction films ever. Took a great premise and turned it into one of the most sappy pieces of trash I have ever seen. As a science fiction fan, I was embarrassed to watch this film.

20. Alien 3 - I always thought this film was underrated, and the new cut on the Quadrilogy set is even better.

24. The Cable Guy - I never understood why this got such a bad rap. It's utterly hilarious and dark.

25. The Ref - Haven't seen this film since it came out, but it has Denis Leary.

29. Antz - The only worthwhile Dreamworks CGI film. Fantastic script and ideas. Hilarious lines and the voice acting is spot on.

30. Atlantis: The Lost Empire - I'd rather go watch Nadia: The Secret Of Blue Water

35. The Edge - The Alec Baldwin/Anthony Hopkins film? Whaaaat?

40. Die Hard 2: Die Harder - The only one of the three Die Hard films I don't own. Just too much of a rehash for me.

41. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - Great film, lots of fun, hearts get removed.

42. To Live and Die in LA - Not too bad.

43. James and the Giant Peach - Not as good as The Nightmare Before Christmas.

48. LA Story - As high concept as this film is, I feel it fell flat on its face.

50. Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey - Better than the first one. Playing the games with Death is an amazing Bergman homage, and utterly hilarious.

52. In The Line of Fire - I love this movie. Everything about it works. Fantastic in every way.

54. Shadow of the Vampire - A good movie, but the climax comes too quickly. Also, Malkovich's accent needs work. It's there in one scene, and gone in the next.

63. Society - Oh yeah! This movie is completely awesome. I picked it up as a blind buy and absolutely loved it.

65. The Mosquito Coast - I didn't realize this film had a lack of love.

66. Ed Wood - Same comment as The Mosquito Coast.

68. Big Night - Hated it. Not funny or touching or anything.

69. A Midnight Clear - An amazing war film. Great script, directing, and performances.

70. 25th Hour - Eh. Not Lee's worst film, but not his best. If I were going to put a Lee film on this list, it would be Bamboozled.

71. Jackie Brown - I guess you could say this has a lack of love, but I think its critical reception has risen over the years. I prefer it to Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs.

74. Casino - I've never heard anyone describe this film in less than glowing terms.

77. The Rules of Attraction - Gotta agree with this one. Great soundtrack, great ending.

81. The Tailor of Panama - Nothing special.

87. Candyman - I just watched this again recently, and it's pretty bad.

89. Gods and Monsters - Are you kidding? This got so much press when it came out. It has plenty of love.

92. Gremlins 2 - This is one of my all-time favorite films. Funny in every possible way. This would be my number 1 if I made this list.

94. Kissing Jessica Stein - I didn't know stupid, boring, cliche-ridden films needed more love.

95. The Prophecy - A Walken classic.

97. A Life Less Ordinary - Don't know why this got so panned. It always puts a huge smile on my face.

98. The Hudsucker Proxy - Definitely one of the most underrated Coen Bros. films.

IMO, the list sucks. It tries to be intelligent acknowledging lesser known films but it comes off totally dumb because of so many dumb movies on the list.
