The music really makes this scene.

Love the raw, visceral feel of the film. One of the 80s greats.

I LOVE the movie. Have had the poster on my wall since it came out. I don't understand why art was altered for dvd & blu release.

For example, say, uhhhh, Fast and the Furious was an acclaimed movie. I know, I know, just imagine... In ten years, young people would slap their forehead and say "did they really listen to that? Did they really dress like that? How silly."

The French Connection hasn't aged a bit. Why? Because Hackman and Schneider didn't have fros and listen to ... whatever it was that was hip in the 70's.
the time period is what makes old movies great. i know when i first saw those warner bros. gangster movies i wasn't nit picking on how they spoke or the way they dressed.

After hearing so much good about this flick over the years - both on dvdtalk and from friends and co-workers....I FINALLY sat down and watched this last night (mainly because of this thread).

It was pretty good. The care chase was excellent - amazing at how boring it makes car chases of today look. Rockstar Games had to have been inspired by this flick big time.

Was really surprised at the head and face shots in the flick - even for 80's non-mainstream standards (which by the way is why a lot of people like myself, never heard of this flick growing up this isn't a tame action flick like lethal weapon a movie I still love as well).

I thought it did drag a bit though but it's a minor complaint.

Other than the music, clothes, cars, & some dialogue....this doesn't feel like an 80's action flick.

Glad I finally watch it.

If you get a chance, and if you've never seen it, check out Cimino's "Year of the Dragon." It makes for a pretty fucking cool double header with L.A. The violence is there too, with those head and face gunshots.

Yeah, Year of the Dragon is one of those films I'm waiting forever to be on BD. Unflinchingly brutal and violent cop drama about one man's fight against the Chinese triad.

Going back to To Live & Die in LA, the 80s, neon-look of film encouraged rumours that Michael Mann sued William Friedkin for plagiarizing the concept of Miami Vice.

Everything looked like that in the 80s... mostly because of the MTV influence.

That actually never happened, it was indeed just a rumor. Mann and Friedkin have been good friends for 30 plus years.

Watched the new Shout Factory BD release last night, along with the special features, and it's one of the best Blu-ray releases of the year. It was phenomenal.

Thanks for the heads up on the new Blu. Will pick it up as it's my favorite Friedkin film.

Has there been a solid comparison to the Arrow UK releases vs. Shout's US release?

I still have my (probably unopened) previous US/Canada release. Damn. I should probably watch it soon.

Not officially but from I read and heard - Arrow sourced the transfer used for both and Shout Factory took care of the special features. I have not looked at Arrow's special features but that's the impression I got.

Also, The Shout Factory release is under their new "Shout Select" banner.

EDIT - Here's a thread over there but I don't have the time to go through all of it.

i don't know what you guys saw in this, but got to say i pretty much disliked this one from start to finish. the acting was terrible, the story even more so and that heralded chase sequence was really nothing special. i really thought the movie was so amateurish that i can't believe Friedkin directed it. liked the twist at the end, but overall very meh. disappointing.

Glad this thread was bumped - As time went on, I ended up constantly thinking about this flick - definitely going to pick it up on disc.

Will check out year of the dragon very soon as well (and I missed your post on that so here's a long overdue 'Thanks').
