entertainment weekly gave it a good review, so i was wondering if this very violent war movie was worth checking out.

You could try asking in International.

I saw it, and for the most part, I was very impressed. The progression of the battles intensifies with each onslaught. The violence near the end gets rather explicit and I was surprised to see that it remained untouched by the rather per-snickety MPAA rating's board.

Some of the film's flaws rest in the fact that everyone, sans our two titled 'brothers' seem like wallflowers and are undeveloped characterwise. The film also bogs down in the music and hollywood-esque cinematic style - a cliched 'kodak moment' was completely unnessecary and eye-rolling.

Besides these two minor flaws, I would still recommend it.

i think because it was a war movie, the mpaa let some of the real graphic stuff (ew says "it makes the famously graphic saving private ryan" look like south pacific".)\

and sorry, but are there any good dvd's out yet?

Sounds interesting...did (will) it get a US release?

I'll end up hunting down the dvd anyway...see if the local store that carries tons of asian films has it for rent.

Great picture. Equal to Saving Private Ryan without the war fetishization.

I saw this yesterday. Great war flick. Very powerful.

Although the older brother (Won Bin) was like Rambo in that movie, I'll let it slide.

It was interesting to see the Korean War from the Korean perspective. It sucked how South Koreans signed up for the North Korean petitions just to get food and were labeled North Korean Communists cuz of that.

I caught this film last week (it happened to be playing at our local Edwards theater) and was impressed with it all around.

Very high production values for a foreign film and historically accurate (According to my Korean friends who had relatives who were on both sides) to boot. Still, I had a nagging feeling that I'd seen this movie before when it was called Saving Private Ryan...

It is definitely a tear-jerker. By the end of the movie I could hear tons of people sniffling/crying around me. That could also be because the audience was mostly Korean.

Hopefully it'll get a decent release...it's not here in South Florida that I've noticed yet...

Jang Dong-Gun was the older brother.

Thought it was quite good. Has spread from only 1 screen here to multiple screens now.
