Re: Alien or Aliens?
Alien pulled me in like no other movie. I never realized how much until the movie was over and I was getting up to leave. I noticed a large soda next to me. I then realized I had bought it and never took one sip. That movie completely had me for those two hours.

For me, it's too difficult to choose between the 2. Alien was a totally different kind of movie than anything I had seen before. Suspenseful, exotic sci-fi with some really cool alien and spaceship designs. Aliens was a great sci-fi action film which built on the suspense of the first movie. I can't choose which I like more. They are equal in my eyes.

They are both excellent and, as pointed out, both very different films in terms of tone. That said, I do feel sorry for people who were not able to see Alien back in 1979 or the early 80s when its truly groundbreaking nature has not been at least a little adulterated by time and advances in film technology. It was truly a marvel in almost every way.
I would have to give the slight nod to Alien. It had a collection of fantastic performances (although Aliens was quite good as well) and was a little less cartoonish. In one way, it reminds me of Jaws. People remember it for the horror aspect, but when you watch it a few more times, you realize just how well-acted it was as well.

I prefer Alien, but watch Aliens more often. Alien is great in so many ways, and Aliens is a non-stop thrill ride.
Add me to the list that can't stand Hudson. He's got the quotes, but is irritating as hell.

Aliens is a perfect action movie. No question about that. Alien is an absolutely exquisite thriller of the highest caliber.
I love both for entirely different reasons. My vote ultimately goes to Alien... twelve years later.

Aliens was a kick-ass movie but Alien scared the shit out of me. I saw it at the theater when it first came out, no previews, no revealing trailers, the only ad for the movie was this egg with yellow-green mist coming out of a crack in its side and the caption: 'In space, no one can hear you scream', no spoilers, no reveals, you had no idea what to expect. Perfect.
Aliens was damned good, but Alien gets my vote.

I actually saw Aliens first. Scared me to death. Have since come to love it as one of my all time greats. Alien is a whole other beast, still great, but Aliens is ultimately fun...

I loved "Aliens". It has to been in the top 5 best action movies of all-time. But this goes to "Alien" by a landslide. Absolutely no comparison. And I give both a 10/10 perfect rating.

Re: Alien or Aliens?
I'd probably give the nod to Aliens, just because I generally prefer action movies a little more than straight horror.
Seeing Aliens in the theater when it first came out was definitely one of the most visceral, intense movie-going experiences I remember. Offhand, I can only think of Star Wars having more of that kind of an impact on me.
