The Sequel Supremacy: Which was better?

So, SCREAM 2 touched upon this discussion, but I pose the question:

Of the following, which sequel topped its original:

ALIEN vs. ALIENS
TERMINATOR vs. T2
STAR WARS vs. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

and the granddaddies of them all:

SUPERMAN THE MOVIE vs. SUPERMAN II
and
THE GODFATHER vs. THE GODFATHER PART II

Re: The Sequel Supremacy: Which was better?

Aliens is a classic and very worthy sequel, but a few of the effects and laughable 80's machismo acting from some of the Marines has dated the film. Alien still looks and feels as fantastic as it did in '79. Better film: ALIEN

T2 is another worthy sequel and one of the finest action films ever. But I still prefer T1 for it's style, originality and novelty for a sci-fi flick from '84, and Schwarzenegger simply made a better badass than puny-looking Robert Patrick. Better film: The Terminator

Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back I love equally. Yes, Empire is faster-paced, more fleshed out and overall probably a better film, but there's just something about the innocence and sense of discovery that I still feel when I watch the original classic that started it all that I just love. Star Wars was also the first film I ever remember watching in a movie theatre.

Superman: The Movie and Superman II? No contest whatsoever. Better film: Superman: The Movie

Godfather I and II, I'll have to think about this one. The first is one of the greatest films ever made. Part II is the greatest sequel ever made. Part I does have Brando's incredible performace, but Part II has that masterful, downright Shakespearian ending. Can't decide for now.

Alien is the better movie, Aliens the better action movie

T2 is one of the best

Star Wars started it all, and gets a lot of credit for it, but Empire has the better acting, plot structure, and effects.

Superman: The Movie is still one of the better, if not the best, comic book movies. Superman II, had it been Donner's original version, sounds like it would have topped it.

I have a problem comparing Alien and Aliens. Yes, technically it is a sequel, but not really. They are two different genres! Alien is not a sci-fi flick, I don't care what anybody says. It is a horror flick in a sci-fi setting. Aliens is an action/sci-fi flick. So it makes apples and oranges hard to compare.

For me, it all boils down to entertainment value:

ALIENS - never boring - ALIEN had some slow parts

TERMINATOR 2 over TERMINATOR - T1 has a better story, but T2 has better execution.

STAR WARS tops EMPIRE in my book. Tough call.

SUPERMAN over SUPERMAN II. Ken Thorne's adaptation of John Williams ruins it for me.

GODFATHER is more entertaining than GODFATHER II. Part 2 is a tad too long.

Alien will always be a better movie, at least to me. It's just downright creepy as hell.

Terminator had a better sense of dread and desperation. T2 was more fun though.

Superman, please. Supes II had one of the weirder endings...not that Supes I was any really better...

Godfather I w/o a doubt.

Empire is better than Star Wars.

Aliens is better than Alien.

I think that T1 is better than T2.

Superman 2 is better than Superman 1 which is not saying much really coming from me.

Godfather over Godfather 2.

Aliens- Only slightly better. I'm more of an action movie guy anyways. Plus Bill Paxton always beats no Bill Paxton.

Terminator 2- Blows the original away. I recently rewatched the original. It is terribly dated. T2 could have come out yesterday.

Superman- Superman 2 was good, but the original is the best.

SW and ESB are tied.

Godfather - Godfather 2 is great but not quite as good as part 1.
