Richard Widmark's film debut as maniacal bad guy Tommy Udo in Kiss of Death (1947). Widmark went on to have a long and distinguished career as a leading man in mostly good-guy roles.

My favorite movie bad guy turned into a good guy has to be John Lithgow. He went from being an over-the-top bad guy in films like Cliffhanger in the early 90s to his hilarious role on TV's "3rd Rock from the Sun".

Lithgow was a nice guy way before he was a bad guy. Movies like The World According to Garp (a transvestite sweetheart), Footloose (a preacher), Twilight Zone: The Movie (a neurotic nice guy).

Willem Dafoe in To Live and Die in L.A. was such a good villain that I rooted for him rather than the two cops. That movie made him a big star.

No question, Alan Rickman may not have succeeded in stealing the goods in Die Hard, but he easily steals this "category" of "award"!

Actually i think it was Platoon that made Dafoe a star(well he has never really been a star, but that movie made him well known anyway)

I think that in a span of 2 years he played Gruber in Die Hard then played the heavy opposite Costner in Robin Hood(Rickman stole the show) and then played the heavy opposite Tom Selleck in Quigley down under, three great villians all in a row

Deforest Kelly before Star Trek used to play the heavy in a lot of westerns until his big break. Look up Deforest Kelly on the IMDb on a 'people' search you'll see the westerns he acted in.

Apologies to other posters, but we have a winner!
