Some people Ive been talking to started to say how a musical score for a movie is better based on the fact that it is created using a 'real orchestra' instead of the 'ovbiously inferior' synth sounds.

Are there good (oscar quality?) movies that had a score created with synth sounds? I dont really know for sure.

Are you talking about synthed orchestras or just electronic music being used to score a film?

Well, there's Wendy (nee: Walter) Carlos turning in some fine Moog action for A Clockwork Orange, as well as synths in The Shining.

Giorgio Moroder's done some excellent synth scores. Midnight Express and Scarface come to mind.
Oh, and Jo Hisaishi was an experimental electronic musician when Miyazaki picked him to to an "image album" for Nausicaa. IIRC, most fo the Nausicaa score is electronic.

Well basically someone was dissing a movie because it had a 'synth soundtrack' and movies with 'real orchestras' are better. I thought it was a lame arugment to make.

Synth is for sure dated. That's the only argument I can see.

If the synth is supposed to sound "synthy," then I would agree that most orchestral scores are better. Most synth scores sound immediately dated, but the quality of synth orchestras has changed dramatically. A lot of smaller films that can't afford to hire a full orchestra will use synth instruments to boost the quality of the soundtrack.
