Amazed Potter took such a big plunge (70% from last friday, I was expecting maybe 60% and about 45% for Saturday and Sunday). Amazed Chronicles is doing that well...same goes for Stepford and Garfield.
As of Saturday, Shrek 2 will have Finding Nemo's "Highest Grossing Animated Feature" record beat.

But on a side note, Prisoner of Azkaban is still outpacing Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. (On a daily basis, including this friday, I don't mean gross (which is evident with the superior opening)).
Shrek 2 is currently en route to beating Star Wars: The Phantom Menance's $431m gross. (and if nothing else, Spider-man's $400m)
And to top that all off.. Mean Girls has had one hell of a run and Saved! is doing pretty impressively for a smaller flick.

Does anyone know what the production budget of Garfield was?
I'm really surprised at its $8M Friday haul... I'm scared for its weekend total.
Needless to say, I spent $15 on Shrek 2 yesterday and $6 on Riddick... and I ain't spending one red cent on that fat cat!

Wonder if Harry will have another Saturday collapse and watch Riddick go by it for the weekend? Also agree that's it surprising to see such a low screen count on Riddick since it was thought to be the top earner of the three new movies this week. Hell, DAT, HP, and Shrek all have more screens than any of the new releases.

That is a good amount, for some reason, Riddick is playing on like 2600 screens, while Potter is playing on 3600 screens, so for fewer screens, Potter was just a million ahead on Friday, Riddick's Friday was decent.

I'm usually wrong about this stuff though so what do I know.

I would not be surprised to see Shrek 2 move up to number 4. I think stepford wives will drop down on Sat and Sun.
I do think Garfield will have higher numbers on Sat and maybe even Sunday due to the kids factor.

It won't, it's pretty common for a drop from Friday to Saturday on opening weekend for hyped up movies that open on Fridays. It should make about $16m on Saturday, I think Riddick will make about $10m on Saturday.

A Saturday drop is not common at all, its most certainly uncommon. So uncommon that when it happens everybody sits up and ways WTF happened there.
Even crappy movies have a better Saturday than Sunday.
Is it just me, or did this who "this movie was sooo hyped up that it was bound to have a better first day than second day" theory just pop up to explain what happened to Potter last week?

and yes, a saturday drop is uncommon. Typically because of the logic that people have more time to see it on saturday then they did on friday. they have the usual morning hours when they would be at work or school on friday free to view it. So it's fridays nice numbers, saturdays larger figures and sundays slightly lower then saturdays numbers.
The front load reasoning was one very easy to look to as a cause here.

Shrek 2 has got some splendid legs. Riddick dropped about what was expected. It looks like all 3 new releases, will make over $20m. As well as Potter and Shrek 2 which means 5 movies above $20m, I'm sure the moguls are happy this weekend (how often do you get a movie that opens in #5 and is considered to have a "successful opening") Potter did worse this weekend than its predecessors but had a much better week than CoS.

The weekend drop for more family oriented/school-age oriented flick is more-or-less meaningless unless it completely tanks.

I don't follow. The movie made more during the week than the previous potter and less on the weekend (It's Summer), seems to me people went and saw it more during the week than during the weekend.

Based on the opening weekend it looked like it was going to beat the first movie and now that is not going to happen.
