next week box office: could be a record?

i just realized 3 big movies are opening next week in an already crowded marketplace.

vin disel in riddick. doesn't look that good. (anyone see the first 10 minutes on mtv? it had the potental to be cool, but man did that look AWFUL. it was like a bad cut scene from a video game) but with vin disel and 12 year old boys who need an action fix, it could do well.

stepford wives: remake of a cult classic with a big cast including one of the biggest stars in the world. seems to be aiming to the more adult crowd

garfield. crappy looking kids flick with built in older fan base, ala scooby doo. could be huge.

all this opening against harry potter's 90 mil opening. wow

my predictions for next weekends box office:

1. harry potter-64 million

2. shrek 2-27 million

3. garfield-25 million

4. riddick- 20 million

5.stepford wives-15million

I think Potter and Shrek are going to suck up a lot of Garfield's audience, whereas Riddick and Stepford have no real competition.

I think Harry's still number one, Shrek's still number two, Garfield is a strong three, and Stepford Wives are fourth...I think they'll beat out Riddick.

Garfield is a kid's movie...but how many kids today follow Garfield? He was popular when I was a kid...but that was in the 80's!

Wow, there's a lot of Riddick hate out there. Granted, I too agree this film is going to struggle initially, and 20-30 million is probably riht on target. But if it's as good as some of the reviews have been saying, it could become a sleeper. And I myself can't wait for it...looks to me to actually have a story and characters, and might not be the idiot fest that everyone assumes it'll be. We shall see.

I don't think as an aggregate next weekend will break records though. I doubt any of these movies will be seeing 60 or 70 million plus on their own, but just a lot of pretty big weekend totals for everyone.
