Lions Gate Films and IFC Films have begun the process of contesting the R rating the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) has applied to its June 25 nationwide release Fahrenheit 9/11, it was announced today by Tom Ortenberg, President of Lions Gate Films Releasing. The MPAA issued the current rating due to "violent and disturbing images and for language." Lions Gate Films has filed an emergency appeal with Jack Valenti of the MPAA for an expedited screening.
"It is sadly very possible that many fifteen and sixteen years olds will be asked and recruited to serve in Iraq in the next couple of years," said Michael Moore. "If they are old enough to be recruited and capable of being in combat and risking their lives, they certainly deserve the right to see what is going on in Iraq."
"Lions Gate Films will continue to aggressively support the artistic visions of our filmmakers. The MPAA rating applied to 'Fahrenheit 9/11' is completely unjustified," said Ortenberg. "We are adamant about overturning this decision in an expeditious manner to ensure that as many people as possible, including young adults who represent the future of our nation, are able to see one of the most important and thought-provoking films of our time in theaters on June 25."
"IFC has great concerns with the MPAA's decision and will do everything within its legal power to fight this unjust rating judgment," stated IFC Entertainment President Jonathan Sehring. "With a film like 'Fahrenheit 9/11', IFC is of the strong belief that all filmgoers should be empowered to make their own viewing decisions. The bottom line is this - during these times, it is crucial for the young people of this country to be fully informed. Michael Moore's voice deserves a broad audience and we are confident this ratings decision will ultimately be overturned."

I don't really buy the argument that kids under 18 need to see this film because they might join the army in a few years ... it will be on DVD by then anyway .

Sorry to bump another Michael Moore thread onto the front page, but it just got a positive review from an unlikely source:

How is Miramax doing?
In the news today, Disney said it could lay off as much as 20% of the Miramax workforce, as part of cost-cutting measures, according to the New York Times and the Dow Jones Newswire. The LA Times reported Miramax has run through most of a $700 million annual budget nearly 4 months before the end of its fiscal year, and said the Weinsteins are under pressure to save money at the movie company. (The company has about 450 employees, so 20% is about 90; the papers reported cuts could come to 100 employees.)
My question is: Is Miramax really in this bad of shape? Weren't the Kill Bill movies huge hits? Have they had any real stinkers this year that they lost tons of money on? Or is this layoff move in retaliation for the bad blood associated with Fahrenheit 9/11?
I realize the answer to the last question largely depends on whether you approve of Michael Moore, but let's do our best to discuss the topic dispassionately.
For the record, I'm not sure of the answer, which is why I asked the question about Miramax's fortunes. I think it is conceivable that the move is in response to the controversy, but only if the studio hasn't been performing well.

Meanwhile, in the United Arab Emirates, the film is being offered the kind of support it doesn't need. According to Screen International, the UAE-based distributor Front Row Entertainment has been contacted by organisations related to the Hezbollah in Lebanon with offers of help.

I do not get this though, are they attempting to get a PG-13???????????
I think once they show real graphic violence(at the very least..lengthy numerous footage of real graphic violence),regardless of how the content is presented,it should be an automatic R rating at most.
I heard it was originally given an NC-17 based on graphic war footage, which I can understand wanting to get an R on appeal with no cuts. Since I think material like that should not be censored in documentaries.
But trying to get a PG-13 is just nuts!!!
Just because it is R rated, does not mean under 17 years olds will not be allowed to see it. They can,if they want to..but with how strict some theaters are today. I can kind of understand the fear of them not being allowed in. Which sucks, since it's supposed to be a free country afterall and the parents should be the ones to choose what their kids are allowed to see,not the government,
I am talking about films here,in case some nutty conservative or 'moral do gooder' will chime in with the scare tactic of "I guess we should show them pornos then to huh?"

You got that right Chass.
Thank you conservatives
As I mentioned on another forum,if Moore is lieing so much as they claim(many without seeing the film!). Then what are they so afraid of? We would find out if he is lieing or what ourselves. Yet since they are pushing for censorship and threatening theaters not to show the film. Well that only gives it more attention and people will seek it out even more.
So thank you conservatives....,you are at least good for something
