The Godfather IV: If Sonny Wasn't Shot, Where would the Corleone Family be now?

A helluva long title, I know, but I suppose Francis Ford Coppola could shorten it to his liking to make the point if he would get behind the camera and film, what I believe, would be a poignant "what-if" in the Corleone saga: if Sonny Corleone hadn't been killed, and Michael never became head of the family, where would they be now?

With James Caan (Sonny), Al Pacino (Michael), Talia Shire (Connie), Robert Duvall (Tom Hagan), Gianni Russo (Carlo Rizzi), and even Marlon Brando (Vito) still alive, a story could be written to where they're in the year...hmm, let's say 1967 so that Brando could be written in realistically (since the original Godfather was set in 1945).

I know that Vito dies in the original, and so does Sonny, but let's just say that Vito dies because of the sadness caused by Sonny's death and Michael's exile. If Sonny hadn't died, perhaps Vito would have lived longer. Michael would have still been with Kay (happily, in a mob-less environ), and Carlo would have still been married to Connie.

Sadly, John Cazale (Fredo) is dead, as is original Godfather pen Mario Puzo, but Fredo's character could have been written off as being killed by a rival mob boss to get at Sonny.

Should a movie like this be made?

Just my speculation. Seeing Caan return, abeit briefly in II, sparked an interest to see him resume his great role in the Family.

Had Sonny lived, he would have eventually gotten hold of a suitcase nuke and in a fit of anger taken out not only the other families, but most of the tri-county area.

Not only would I not want to see something like this made, the chances that any of the actors would particapate in such a project is so impossible that even if we wanted it to, it wouldn't happen.

No, Sonny died. I'd rather not try and suppose he didn't. And the Coppola who made those first two great Godfather films is no more...why even bother.

Interesting thread. But how can we explain something that did not happen?

I think the movies are good as they are now. If they start making 'what if' movies, then they'll never end.
