Heaven's Gate needed the ol' trim and tightening.

3 hours and 45 minutes long and I still didn't know what the characters were about for the first 2 1/2 hours.

a recent one is Something's Gotta Give.

Jack is my favorite, but this movie was too long.

Good call - I think the editor took a long break when he was supposed to be cutting that one. They could have trimmed a good twenty or thirty minutes and not let it drag on and on.

Meet Joe Black

Do we really need to see Brad and Claire look at each other that many times after leaving the coffee shop? Well, I guess the punchline wouldn't have come as a hilarious surprise.

Mystic River. There was a perfect point for the film to end, then it went on for an anticlimactic few scenes.

Damn, I thought I was going to be the only one to put up a nod for ROTK. It has about a half dozen points where they could have ended it.

An hour could have easily been cut out of Return of the King and it would have been the same movie. Everything was too drawn out, and there was no reason for it to be. The story was already set up and it just had to finish. There were no crucial plot points to reveal except for the ending (which turned out to be multiple endings, many of which should have been saved for the Extended Edition) and it just dragged on and on...

I loved ROTK but I agree it was too long. The real ending of ROTK in the book is with the hobbits, it's just like it "should" be. But, as far as translating to film and all that, I would have ended it after all the battle stuff is resolved and saved the hobbit ending for the extended DVD. Or, cut out the hobbit ending and add in stuff in the middle of the movie that should have been there

Spoiler:
like Saurman getting soundly trounced and other stuff like the injuries that pippin and Eowyn get after killing the witch king, being healed after the big battle and eowyn falling in love with Faramir and stuff...

if you read the book you'd know what happens and you can see that it was obviously filmed but cut out.

the most recent one for me is Open Range...the last ten minutes should absolutely go...completely ruined an already borderline film....i'd guess somewhere around 20-30 minutes could easily have been cut from it and it would only have improved it.

I recently watched my copy of Akira for the first time and that movie could stand to lose about 15 minutes.

I just revisited it last night, and my god are you right. That is PAINFUL after a while. I hated it the first time I saw it, but I did like the start this time, but that wedding is just a tether. Some good stuff in it, but just Cimino mental masturbation for the most part.

That(and Once Upon a Time in America) are examples of movies that are made to feel longer by shortening them. There was quite a bit cut out of Blow to get it down to a 2 hour run time, and it would have served the film better had it been included.

I love Return of the King's ending. When you consider that they are wrapping up 9 hours worth of story, the ending isn't long at all.

Most recently, Van Helsing - could have been trimmed by a good 30 minutes.

Braveheart, Gladiator (aka Braveheart 2)

I think a good hour of melodrama could have been excised from both.

if you know the source material ROTK's ending was rushed, quite a bit actually considering all that happens in the book that doesn't make it to screen
