What is the Hollywood Stock Exchange?

From the website: “Buy shares of your favorite actors and their new movies. Watch their values rise or fall based on their success. Prices soar with a blockbuster opening at the box office and plummet with a bomb no one went to see.” For those who have never played, the game is as a complicated or as easy as you want to make it (much like the real stock market).

Now, I know several of you already have HSX accounts. To keep things fair, in order to participate in the league you’ll need to start up a new account. Here’s what you need to do to join the league:

1. Go to www.hsx.com and start up a new account.

2. You can use any username you want, although if everybody used the format “DVDTalk_[DVDTalk Username]” it would make things easier to track. For example, if my DVDTalk username was "Stockbroker" my account for the league will be DVDTalk_Stockbroker.

3. When signing up, put down DVDTalk_solipsta in the "Did a friend refer you?" column. Feel free to take advantage of any of the special offers and freebies offered at this time as well.

4. After you sign up, go to “Account Information” and set your “Screen Name” to be exactly the same as your screen name here at DVDTalk. This will help avoid confusion.

5. Come back here and post your HSX user name. You need to have a new account, or I won’t add you to the league.

6. Entry into the league is always open...we welcome newcomers!

Remember, new players: add today's "Bottom Feeder" DVDTalk_solipsta) as your referral when signing up!

One of the top movers today is Chronicles of Narnia, it's up 5.25 already. Is there something I'm missing about this movie, or are people mistaking it for Chronicles of Riddick?

Been playing for about 8 days, and am currently sitting in at number 18 with a 2.8 million networth. Excellent.

I'm happy where I'm at.. at one point, I was down to $1.6M. If I were to play less conservatively, I could probably do even better.

I'm finally making some big bucks after fluctuating around 2 mil for the first month and its all thanks to those blockbuster warrants. Thanks Groucho.

I got a question for you more seasoned HSXer's, are these blockbuster warrants likely going to climb until they come close to or higher than their strike price? Or will they level out at a much lower price? Thanks for the answer in advance.

They announced Tilda Swinton has joined the cast. That news let people know this stock was out there and also confirmed that the movie is really going to get made. It may slip back down over the next few days or on Saturday, when people can take their profits commission free.

Don't confuse the strike price with the warrant price. For example, Shrek2 has a strike price of $250 million. That means you are betting that Shrek2 will make more than $250 million by labor day. At Labor Day, the warrant will cash out at total box office minus $250 million. This means that if Shrek2 makes $300 million, the warrant will cash out at $50. If Shrek2 makes $280 million, the warrant will cash out at $30. And if Shrek2 makes less than $250 million, the warrant will cash out at $0.

In terms of individual warrants, your guess is as good as mine. As a group, though, typically at least a third (and often more) of the warrants cash out at 0. They tend to move around a bit up until the movie is released, but afterwards, tend to be pretty stable.

I can say for certain that riding the warrents has been fun and has helped me get to the top ten. Just have to jump from shorting to investing as it goes along. Shrek 2 and HP3 seem to be the strongest while the others take a hit as they come closer. Helsing went downhill quickly after opening weekend. Not only did it make me a cool 50,000 going up, but it made almost that when it was shorted.

They've been mighty helpful in getting some quick cash day trading.

I still don't really know what I'm doing (strategy-wise). I'm just kinda doing my thing and hoping it works.

I've made about $95k so far.

I haven't tried any of the warrants yet.

Long term wise, this movie is a very good stock to get, as it is from a much loved set of books (Never read myself, a little too religiously themed for my tastes) written by C.S. Lewis. The movie is budgeted at over $100 million and is considered a potential slam dunk box office wise. I am honestly surprised the stock has been so low for so long. Once they get a decent length into production and the first production stills start making their way around the web, look for this stock to climb towards H$100.

It's low because it hasn't had much news for a while. It will go up and down steady amounts of times before reaching a 70+ mark as hype comes along.

Hope everyone picked up the Shrek2 call today.

As for strategy, I'm finding myself with more stocks shorted than not. Of course I wouldn't recommend shorting anything that won't come out for a while, but once you're close to the release date.

I wish I had more money to short Troy. I really don't think that it is going to do as well as people seem to think.

Slight hijack: I just wanted to point out that the books are very enjoyable from a non-religious perspective. It isn't "Left Behind" or anything like that, and it's all allegory anyway.

I shorted Troy when it was at $169, then panicked as it climbed into the $180's. Fortunately I held on to it, and now it's only at $170. Now I just have to decide whether to hold on or dump if it drops below $169...

Edit: $168 and dropping

I just sold off a majority of my stock in the Laminated List since I can make a quicker buck by Shorting.

I have $184 million in my HSX portfolio.

I also played for a few years before stopping for a year, then picking it up again.

(Thought I posted this earlier, can't find it now)

How many are in the league now? I have 61, but I'm not sure that's right.

awww crap, that means I am missing two people in my league.

The more people that join, the harder it will be to find the ones your missing.

edit - Wait, the main list has only 63, are you sure you have 64?

I added DVDTalk_jnielsen, and that brings me up to 63, If I am missing someone, I have no idea who, and they arent reflected on the top of this page.
