Awesome movies you thought would suck?

Star Wars. I didn't think too much about sci-fi films back then, especially the kind with mythological overtones and an homage to the Saturday matinee. But my dad, who has been always an average moviegoer, decided to take our entire family to see this, largely based on word of mouth from his colleagues. The theatre I saw it in Paramus, NJ (May 1977, to boot), happened to be one of the original 32 theatres that played Star Wars, so it was just before the film became the worldwide phenomenon that it is today.

Well for me I thought, The Last Samurai, Van Helsing (fluff but fun), and 12 Monkeys. Now, not all of these are "amazing/classics", but they definitely made me change my mind from thinking they were crap to pretty good flicks.

I guess for me it would be T3. When I heard Cameron & Hamilton weren't attached I thought it would suck but still went anyway since I enjoyed the previous two. I don't think I'd say it's awesome but it far exceeded my expectations.

Super Troopers. From the trailers, I expecting something utterly awful, but was really surprised at how good (and poorly marketed) the movie was. It was a complete contrast to Along Came Polly.

I have to second Fight Club, I did not want to see a movie about some guys fighting each other, boring. This has got to be one of the worse cases of studio ad department dropping the ball, kicking in the street and having said ball hit by a convoy of 18-wheelers.

I never think that I will hate a movie, and end up loving it. I have however thought that I would only like a movie, and ended up loving it. House of Sand and Fog is one example of this.
A few times I have figured I would hate a movie, then after watching it, I despised it more than ever.
Fast and the Furious being one of those.

I know I'll probably receive death threats for this, but Last Action Hero was far better than it got credit for.
Legally Blonde
Joe Dirt
Starship Troopers
Ladies Man
And my all-time biggest surprise...Night at the Roxbury. I hated the skit, but this movie is just completely hilarious!

Now my picks..
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
I pretty much hated the whole fantasy/D&D/elves/wizards genre. I had never read the books, honestly I knew NOTHING about them, other than the people who loved them seemed to be the same people I didn't like. The movies changed my mind.
In America
Okay, I didn't think it would suck, but I saw the trailer a LONG time ago before there was any buzz for it and thought it would be standard family drama, maybe even slightly boring. I ended up falling in love with this movie.
