Here's one I didn't see mentionned. Some of the humor (the bumbling cops) is rather silly but Anthony Wong's portrayal of a serial killer, which won him best HK actor in 1993, is fantastic. This is an extremely harrowing, disturbing , and gory film.

What a kick ass thread - seriously, I haven't heard of a lot of these flicks and I'll prob. end up watching them all.
THIS is what it's all about.
Thanks everyone.

For scary and gory I'd go with:
'Hellraiser'
'Hellbound: Hellraiser 2'.
Both atmospheric and extremely gory.
For atmospheric and not so much gory try:
'the Shining' (Kubrick)
'Pet Cemetary'
'Rosemary's Baby'
'What ever Happened to Baby Jane'
'Nosferatu' (silent & Werner Herzog versions)
'Freaks' (Todd Browning)
For straight gore try:
'Cannibal Ferox' (real animal deaths may offend)
The three movies that prolly disturb/upset me the most were already mentioned elsewhere in this thread:
'Salo'
'Exorcist'
'Requiem for a Dream'
'Hellraiser'
'Hellbound: Hellraiser 2'.
Both atmospheric and extremely gory.

this one? any place to get it cheaper?
Incorrect. The EC NTSC version is also cut during the "Last Road To Hell" segment. The earlier EC disc in PAL which is long OOP (with the green cover with the woman impaled on pole) was UNCUT, but not this one.

Yes that is the only version on dvd to get!
All other versions are cut in some way such as...
U.K hacks out all the animal violence,as well as the rapes & anything that counts as 'sexual violence',which is basically everything in the film.
Recent 2-dvd Italian SE is minorly cut, missing some real execution footage durring the 'Last Road To Hell' documentary footage.
All this is intact on the EC release of the film.

Well the bootleg VHS I got was taken from an EC release. So I assumed it was this dvd,or the original release...but everyone claimed the NTSC version was the same version...which I planned to get someday.
Guess I will have to wait & see if Grindhouse will ever get there asses together an finally release the ****ing dvd. IT has been what 5 years? Maybe longer?

these are all such great posts!!
i didn't realize how much i was missing. and julie they are all good. i did want many opinions and gutwrenchers were indeed some i had not thought of but were what i was going for in terms of expansionism of horizons.
some i have, but some of these sounded real good like haute tension and cannibal holocaust..i will look into, among others...now only if they were easy to get a hold of...
but these are so great keep them coming...i am so appreciative.

"The Innocents" - very underrated and raises the goosepimples from your neck - highly recommended (now where's the DVD?)

HAUTE TENSION, Alexandre Aja's French gorefest set for Lions Gate release sometime this fall, has been given an NC-17 for its copious gore. And as of now, it looks like the company is going to stick with the rating instead of making cuts for an R or going out unrated. We can only applaud this decision, and encourage fans to check out the movie in theaters when it opens; the more NC-17 movies are successful, the faster the stigma will disappear and the rating will become a viable one."

I have no idea why Lions Gate is being so vague on it's release plan for HAUTE TENSION - they seem to be sitting on the fence with this. Fango mentioned at one point that LG wouldn't be releasing this until early 2005 - I hope that they aren't and release this promptly with all the hyped up advance word.

I may hold off until more info gets out. 34 or 35 bucks for that movie seems a little steep, seeing that it has no english subs. If I can find it cheaper in France when I am there in the summer I'll pick it up. thanks for the help gutwrencher
