What is the Hollywood Stock Exchange?

From the website: “Buy shares of your favorite actors and their new movies. Watch their values rise or fall based on their success. Prices soar with a blockbuster opening at the box office and plummet with a bomb no one went to see.” For those who have never played, the game is as a complicated or as easy as you want to make it (much like the real stock market).

Now, I know several of you already have HSX accounts. To keep things fair, in order to participate in the league you’ll need to start up a new account. Here’s what you need to do to join the league:

1. Go to www.hsx.com and start up a new account.

2. You can use any username you want, although if everybody used the format “DVDTalk_[DVDTalk Username]” it would make things easier to track. For example, if my DVDTalk username was "Stockbroker" my account for the league will be DVDTalk_Stockbroker.

3. When signing up, put down DVDTalk_solipsta in the "Did a friend refer you?" column. Feel free to take advantage of any of the special offers and freebies offered at this time as well.

4. After you sign up, go to “Account Information” and set your “Screen Name” to be exactly the same as your screen name here at DVDTalk. This will help avoid confusion.

5. Come back here and post your HSX user name. You need to have a new account, or I won’t add you to the league.

6. Entry into the league is always open...we welcome newcomers!

Rememeber, new players: add today's "Bottom Feeder" DVDTalk_solipsta) as your referral when signing up!

So is there a way to figure out by the current price of the stock what is estimated for the weekend box office? Is there something like that mentioned on the site? Does anyone have any insights?

The stock price doesn't really "estimate" the weekend box office. Until it adjusts it reflects fluctuations in the market.

However, since new films opening in wide release have their prices adjusted to 2.9*weekend gross, you can devide the the stock's price by 2.9 and see how the "market" sees the possibilities for the film.

For example, Van Helsing (VHELS) is currently at 133.10. This means that if you think it'll make more than 46 million over the weekend you should BUY/COVER. If you think it'll make less, you should SELL/SHORT.

You can also look at the prices of the Calls and Puts to see how the market is judging a film.

Dividing the current price of the stock by 2.9 is the standard calculation for upcoming films that open on a Friday. Check the calender and it will usually tell you what the formula will be for the next 2 opening weekends. However remember how wildly the values can fluctuate.

Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately, since I hit big with Mean Girls, I have lost well over $200K. I was over the $4M mark for a short while, but now have dropped back a bit.

However, I have some secret stocks that I think might help me get ahead in the next couple of weeks

I lost a bit this week, too. I invested in a stock that, while now showing profit now, will skyrocket as its release date approached.

I'd like to pick up a large amount of stocks in one thing I know will make money but it is hard to let go of all the different ones that I have that I know will turn a slow steady profit. Oh well.

So how much does MEANG have to make this weekend to meet it's 70.00 per share price tag?

This weekend doesn't matter. It won't adjust again until it delists May 24. That adjust will be based on the total gross for the first four weeks of release.

A heads-up for everybody:

HSX has released their Blockbuster Warrants today. These are basically long-term CALL options based on how much the movies will make by labor day. Here is the first round of movies:

Van Helsing - H$150 Strike BWVAN
Troy - H$180 Strike BWTRO
Shrek 2 - H$220 Strike BWSH2
The Day After Tomorrow - H$180 Strike BWDAT
Harry Potter 3 - H$250 Strike BWHP3
The Chronicles of Riddick - H$80 Strike BWCRD
The Stepford Wives - H$70 Strike BWSTP
Garfield - H$70 Strike BWGAR
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story - H$70 Strike BWDGB
The Terminal - H$120 Strike BWTRM

All of these have their IPO today at $5. They will cash out on September 7 based on the difference between the strike price and the total earnings at that time. If the strike price isn't reached, the warrant will cash out at $0.

Thanks for the heads up on the long-term calls, Groucho.

By they way - I've moved up to #27!!! I haven't been a bottom feeder for a couple of days.

I hope everyone is taking a good look at those Blockbuster Warrants. I think most if not all are good deals. Based on current stock price, most people think Van Helsing and Troy will make those warrant strikes in the first 4 weeks.

Not quite. The market thinks Van Helsing will open to 1/3rd of the warrant's strike price. Most people think Van Helsing will have a pretty steep drop-off, as most of the audience will move on to Troy the next week.

Regardless of the drop, it has a very long time to make that amount since it is till september to cash it out. By that time I'm sure you can move to short it if it's going bad. All of them seem very possible to make that amount.

I hope everyone got on the bandwagon - the real trick of course is to figure out when to get off.

That's a good point - summer movies generally have huge drop-offs because of intense competition. Still, as Jack said, Van Helsing has till Sept. to make the $150.
