From IMDB:

Griet (Johansson) is a peasant girl who is forced to work as a maid in the home of the painter Johannes Vermeer (Firth). She eventually becomes the model for what becomes one of his most famous works. Based on Tracy Chevalier's novel.
The score is a 7.3. I feel that's a just score. The movie isn't great, but it isn't a bad movie by any means.

The film is very good. Spare, sumptuous and erotic. A great performance by Scarlette Johansson, and absolutely stunning cinematography and art direction. It's a slow, hypnotic film, that discuss the art of painting in just as passionately as the lust in men's eyes (I love their study on lighting and the placement of objects).

...well... this review gives this exceedingly boring, rather ridiculous movie 1,5 stars out of four, which I - being Dutch by birth, an admirer of Vermeer's paintings, and shocked by hearing all these supposedly "Dutch" people speaking British English, and knowing that all but a couple of Delft scenes were actually filmed in Luxemburg, or somewhere like that, but Hey! what can you do? - as I was going to say, in my usual long-winded way, I thought was waaay too generous a rating...

...otoh, America's foremost movie critic gives the movie four stars out of four... so...

I thought it was OK but not great by any means. Lovely to look at but somewhat empty when it's all been said and done. Scarlett Johansson and others in the cast were better than the movie itself. Worth seeing once.

...well... it's a ring in one's ear - hence "earring" (otherwise it would be Cockney English for "hearing": "Are you 'earing me 'arry?")...
