Recommend some good modern martial arts movies.

I mentioned this in the kung fu thread but didn't get much help. What I'd like are some recommendations for films along the lines of Hero, Zatoichi, CTHD, Versus, Azumi etc - stylish and/or gory weapons based martial arts movies. I say modern because I've already seen a bunch of the older stuff like Kurosawa and Shaw Brother's movies, but haven't seen much really cool stuff made in the last few years.

Thanks.

From HK: Tai Chi Master, Fist of Legend

From US: Only the Strong (not excellent and not new but definitely expose the promoted martial art - capoeira).

If you like fantasy wirework action, just look for anything directed or choreographed by Ching Siu Tung or Cheng Siao Tung.

By modern do you mean made recently or do you mean set in modern times?

Muay Thai film Ong Bak. Check it out here .
Demo's at the French cinema premiere:

http://madgamers.freesurf.fr/autres/avp-ob_demo.zip

Unfortunatley, the film is leaglly only available without English subtitles, and is unlikely to get an uncut release with them .

I second ONG BAK. It was one of those films where you do your ECW chant of HOLY SHIT, HOLY SHIT!

I was once the fight scenes started. And then hearing how many production delays there were because the stunt crew had to recover from injuries, I was

How's the quality of the DVD? I see it's 16:9 enhanced with 5.1 DD so that is an excellent start. The screenshots and synopsis look interesting and at $12 how can I go wrong! This may be a good blind buy for me.

The quality of the dvd is fine.
In fact, except for the lack of subtitles, the release would be near-perfect, and a steal at $12 postpaid. In case you watch it on/from a PC, and you sw player can add subtitles, they are available on the 'net.

Good question - I should have clarified. I mean movies made recently. The setting of the movie doesn't matter.

Due to less than satisfactory results, I'm giving my thread a shameless bump from the unseen void of page 2.

The movies I'm looking into so far are:

Iron Monkey
Ong-Bak
Fist of Legend

What else?

I notice the DVD is Region 3 and is PAL. Will my Toshiba SD-3900 DVD player be able to play it? What about my TV? I have a 32" Sony VVEga flatscreen.

It's my understanding that the 3900 can be made region free with a simple hack, and can also convert PAL to NTSC properly. So yes, your player should play it fine (the tv doesn't matter).

EDIT: Oh yeah, here's the thread regarding the 3900 hack.

Caiman,

Thank you very much! I went ahead and ordered it for $12. Should be here within 10-15 days. Also thanks for the link to the Region-free hack for the Toshiba player. I don't know how I'm going to burn it to a DVD-R, I don't have a DVD burner.

On the site it says it's R3 PAL, not NTSC.

Romeo Must Die and Kiss of the Dragon aren't too bad.

Even though Bruce Lee movies are old, you might want to consider them as they're great classics.

Dragon the Bruce Lee story might be worth a rental as well.

You don't burn it to a DVD-R. Just a regular CD-R will do.

Drunken Master II - AKA Legend of Drunken Master (1994)
w/Jackie Chan

Fong Sai Yuk (1993) w/Jet Li

The Heroic Trio (192) w/Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui & Michelle Cheung

Master of the Flying Guillotine (1975)

Project A (1983) w/ Jackie Chan & Sammo Hung

Wing Chun (1994) w/Michelle Yeoh

While not exactly Kung Fu, some very cool Samurai action can be found in Kurosawa's Yojimbo ('61) and Sanjuro ('62), both featuring the coolest movie tough guy of all time, Toshiro Mifune.

Will I need two drives, one to put the CD-R, and the other to put the DVD to burn? I only have a CD-RW drive on my computer with Nero.

All you need is a CD-R drive. So it sounds like you're fine.

The Thai (the original, and up until a week or two ago the only official) release is PAL. If memory serves me right, the R3HK release is cut by a couple of seconds.

One of my favourites is Fong Sai Yuk starring Jet Li. Avoid the US dubbed version (The Legend) and get the HK DVD (not sure if it's still in print or not). Fist of Legend is great too, but there isn't a readily available decent DVD of it yet.
