Another bad DeNiro film...what a waste of talent.
At one time, Robert DeNiro was my favorite actor. Whenever a new film of his would come out, I always knew that it was worth a look as he always seemed to try and tackle challenging & interesting material. In my mind, he was the greatest actor of his generation, and I looked forward to years and years of great & challenging roles.
Not anymore. Now whenever I see that he has a new film coming out, I automatically think it's going to suck, and in most cases I'm right (his new film, Godsend has gotten brutal reviews). I can't remember the last film he was in that I really enjoyed. Here is an actor who has totally given up on his craft and instead gone for the easy roles & easy money. He has become a joke, and a lazy one at that (ie: Scorcese offered him a role in Gangs of NY, but he declined because he did not want to have to travel to Italy). Very, very sad.

While I'll give him the benefit of the doubt about "Gangs of NY" (perhaps there are unknown reasons why he did not want to travel), there is no denying that he has made a string of crappy films.
Nicholson has also made a string of bad films in which he just "got by playing Jack". Thank God he came to his senses and made "The Pledge". It was great seeing him actually take on a challenging role and act again. |

His last good film was Ronin, IMO. Meet the Parents was pretty decent for his comedic roles.

I think Jack's are just really lighthearted romantic comedies, they aren't dramas or to be taken seriously. And what's wrong with him just being Jack, it obviously works ok for him. As for DeNiro, his just seems to be a case of selecting really horrible projects. The first ANALYZE movie was the only one I even found tolerable. |

I enjoyed his performance in The Score with Edward Norton, but 15 Minutes was cringe-worthy.

DeNiro aint made a good movie outside of Ronin since Casino...and we all know why that was good...Scorcese...I dont know what it is...but he just really pisses me off nowadays...just lookin at him pisses me off...I guess cause of all those great roles he had...and then now...so sad...

AAARRRGGGGHHHH!!!! I hated The Pledge soooo much! It goes down in my book as having the worst, and most anti climactic ending I have ever seen! Spoiler:
On topic, I will say theat while unfortunate, Godsend being bad really doesnt surprise me. |

De Niro seems to be more interested in a paycheck than real acting lately. Perhaps to fund his film festival, but probably more likely just for the cash.
Rocky and Bullwinkle? Analyze That? (Anaylze This was pretty sub-par but its sequel takes the case 15 minutes? Showtime? The Score was decent though. I thought Meet the Parents was hillarious. |

I am not sure what is up with Robert De Niro...but, please, those of you who say Jack Nicholson is "just playing Jack"...put in a good word for me with him...since you obviously know him so well.

Personally I've always thought DeNiro was a one talent actor. I mean you get him in the right role he's going to be wonderful and it's going to be a great movie (Ronin for example). You go against "type" though and he's lost, I thought all his "comedic" attempts were horrible.

For as long as I can remember I've loved DeNiro and would have given him kudos over Jack at any given time......however this past year I've been giving Nicholson the benefit of a doubt and watching alot of his movies that had slipped through my viewing cracks. I agree. A 'bad' Nicholson movie is 3 times better than a bad DeNiro movie, and Nicholson is still putting forth wonderful performances. A best actor nomination as recently as a year ago; when's the last time DeNiro got a nomination?? Raging Bull is one of my ALL TIME favorite movies, but thats eons ago at this point. Ronin was indeed a great film, and I like Meet The Parents and Analyse That, both fun movies.......but he's just 'being DeNiro' for laughs ala his Scorcese fims in both. Somebody needs to send him a script worth his talent.

I have seen The Mission and I enjoyed it but he's still essentially playing the "tough guy", Jeremy Irons is the one who really makes that movie IMHO. I think I've seen Awakenings but if I have I don't recall much about it. I admit I haven't seen the other two (or certainly all of his movie). I also admit I might be over reacting a bit to his recent comedic roles (which I just think he has no talent for) but while I've always thought he was a good actor (maybe even one of the "greats") I've always found his range rather limited. I hardly watch any new movies featuring De Niro. Not that I am disappointed with his current works but because I am just not interested.
