What actor or director deserves a lifetime achievement Oscar?

These should be actors or directors who have never won an Oscar and are nearing the end of, (or have ended), their career.

I think Sidney Lumet (who is 80) should get an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement. He has made quite a few really fine films; 12 Angry Men, Network, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, The Verdict, Prince of the City, The Pawnbroker... and, incredibly, has never won an Oscar. The Academy may be waiting to give him one seeing how he is still directing but I would like to see hime get it while he his still up & about.

Martin Scorscese and Robert Altman. They better get of their ass and start giving out recognition before a person dies. I hate their posthumous awards that are more self congratulatory than honorific.

Oh yeah, I agree with Lumet as well.

I asked for people who have never won an Oscar and are at the end of their careers and I get answers of DeNiro, Spielberg, John Cusack...

Ford & Scorcese are not at the end of their careers so I would wait awhile before considering them.

Robert Altman was the best answer so far, and I totally agree.

Another vote for Sidney Lumet. IMHO Dog Day Afternoon is one of the most underappreciated American films... even though it's still considered a classic.

Also, I'm biased because his book was the first one on cinema I ever read... and it consequently sent me down this irrevocable path of cinephiledom.

My criteria is to award it to those who never won. With that in mind, Robert Altman most definately and I'd like to see ones for:

Walter Hill(longshot)
Hal Needham(impossibility)
Jackie Chan(little chance in hell)
Christoher Lloyd(probably not a big enough star)
Burt Reynolds(definately deserving and will get one)
Lily Tomlin(the funniest woman ever in movies in my book)
Roger Moore(probably also deserves it but not enough "serious" work)
Jim Jarmusch(still young for a director, maybe in 20 years, but will probably never win a real Oscar)
John Williams(has won many, but career achievments definately warrant it)
Dick Smith(one time winner, but a very important unsung person in movie history)
Rick Baker(has won several, but is also a seminal figure)
Lazlo Kovacs(no brainer, I can't believe he never won one)
Peter Bogdonovich
Harold Ramis(perhaps the most underrated comedy director ever?)
John Landis(though his last 15 years have been remarkably inept)

They should give Fay Wray a lifetime achievement Oscar.

She at least deserves it for her performances in King Kong and Mystery of the Wax Museum, both 1933.

(By the way, a new book of hers should be coming out soon...another BY her).

Peter Weir will deserve one, if he doesn't win one before he retires.

Lucas - not because of direction or writing but for founding Skywalker Sound, ILM and THX certification. Without these things many great things about movies would not be possible.
Lumet should also recieve one. Too many great films that he has made.
