guess your gonna have to go to the U.K to see "the Dreamers" uncut

imdb.com
Fox Searchlight is expected to screen a highly censored version of Bernardo Bertolucci's controversial The Dreamers at the Sundance Film Festival this week, the London Sunday Times reported. In advance of its scheduled domestic release in March, the studio has reportedly made cuts of as much as 60 seconds to scenes involving frontal nudity and male masturbation, the newspaper said. In an interview with the Sunday Times, the cuts were condemned by one of the film's stars, Eva Green. "It is quite paradoxical, because in America there is so much violence, both on the streets and on the screen. They think nothing of it. Yet I think they are frightened by sex." (Bertolucci himself has previously expressed concern that his film would be "mutilated" by U.S. censors.) The newspaper said that the film will be shown uncut when it is released in the U.K.

Female masturbation on the other hand is A-OK! As it should be.

Why do they always bring up the whole "In America, they show violence but not nudity" Hello, us Americans don't like seeing penises in our movies!

Rypro 525,

Do you actually have any interest in this movie or are you just provoking another "Jack Valenti raped my childhood and then censored the evidence!" thread?

Maybe if the penis shot bullets it would be more accepting to the American public.

The ratings board is a joke when it comes to mature & intelligent films concerning sex. There is an article in the new issue of Sight & sound about this very same topic,

guess you're gonna have to change this thread

From today's Hollywood Reporter:
Fox Searchlight Pictures is daring to challenge the NC-17 taboo.

The specialty films division of 20th Century Fox said Monday it will release the uncut version of Bernardo Bertolucci's "The Dreamers," marking the first time in more than six years that a studio belonging to the Motion Picture Assn. of America has distributed a film rated NC-17, a tag that generally means commercial death....

Helmer Bertolucci said in a statement: "'The Dreamers' is finally making it to the U.S. in its uncut version. I'm relieved -- in so many ways -- that the distributor has had the vision to release my original film. After all, an orgasm is better than a bomb."

I guess Julie Walker is very happy.
or are you just provoking another "Jack Valenti raped my childhood and then censored the evidence!" thread?
I was more in that area, since I had never heard of the movie before. I wonder, if due to the NC-17, that only art theaters get the movie.

Finally another NC-17 rated movie, what was the last one, L.I.E?

By the way, when is Fox Searchlight going to release this film? I think it behove them to release this to the largest amount of theatres that will book NC-17 rated films and gain as much money as possible from the controversy and not be city centric and release this only in NY and LA.

Feb. 6 in NY and LA, eventually rolling out to more than 100 theaters. Searchlight says they'll take it wider "depending on the public's response".

I wish some of the people on this forum would grow up a little. If this was being censored for ANY other reason, the site would practically be in flames from all the people "up in arms", but since it's *GASP* male nudity, it's no big deal.

Censorship is censorship, people.

I agree, I mean, look at the number of posts in the Kill Bill threads about the one scene in b&w while asians get it in color while Tarantino wanted it in b&w.

The Dreamers

Anyone had a chance to see the Dreamers last weekend?
I would like to hear your thoughts on the film...

I read the news that with its limited release, it had an impressive openning of $30,016 per screen. The highest so far this year...

it'll be hard for most to see this movie since it might get into art theaters only due to the nc-17 rating.

I've only seen Last Tango in Paris. How does it compare to that?

mind you 'limited release' means 5 screens in the entire US. The second extended limited release happens this Friday - which at that point more cities will have chosen whether or not to book and present this NC-17 rated film.

That IMDB note seems to be suggesting that newspapers are not denying ad space to this film yet. Thats a positive trend.

I'll be seeing it this weekend hopefully.

Wow - Bertolucci at the top of his form! This movie is one of the best I have seen in a long time, filled with a love for life, a love for movies, and moments of pure magic. I can't wait to see this again because I'm sure I missed many references. The cast is terrific, and the soundtrack seems to have captured the essence of 1968 pop music.
