Saw Say Anything for the first time (I'm 31) recently, and have to say, I was severely let down. I saw very little trace of the genius who gave us Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, and his best film, Vanilla Sky.

Almost Famous is a truely great film. I watched it for the 3rd time over the weekend and loved it more than ever.

But ...Say Anything is still the winner. Best romantic comedy ever.

Most honest teen love story ever.

How could you have not seen any sign of genius when Say Anything contains so many bits and pieces and jokes that he latter recycled in his other movies?

"Almost Famous", though if Crowe had directed "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"...

Well, Almost Famous is in my top 3 films of all time, so that easily got my vote. However, Say Anything is also pretty high on my alltime list. Lloyd is just too awesome of a character to not get my respect

Almost Famous!

And if I could vote twice, Jerry Maguire would be the number 2 choice (It's a VERY close second--Personal note: I have both the SE DVD's of these, and the commentaries are like listening in to a genius having a party). Crowe is a wonderful filmmaker, and I hope his next new, original film comes close to these two.

Almost Famous, because it is as close to a perfect movie as you are ever going to see. Say Anything is a close second though.

Re: BEST Cameron Crowe directed film?

Amazingly a dedicated Almost Famous thread doesn't seem to exist here. So, at the risk of a thousand joking "Aloha" posts after the bump (yes, we all get the joke, it's not a good movie) , I did want to share this here.
As a huge fan of Almost Famous, this article was sort of the holy grail. I figured we would eventually get it included in a packet in a re-release someday (like how we eventually got Jerry Maguire's Mission Statement), but it never came. Until today :

Re: BEST Cameron Crowe directed film?

I tried to like it, but I never felt any of that love for Almost Famous. I think Singles was much better, and that's pretty much a time capsule of all things 90's.

Not a fan of his work, but if I had to pick his best it would be Say Anything.

Re: BEST Cameron Crowe directed film?

We should probably do a new poll now that includes Elizabethtown.

Re: BEST Cameron Crowe directed film?

Really weird that after the run of Say Anything, Singles, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky, he was one of my favorite film-makers, and I anticipated many more great movies to come from him.
20 years later, I can't be certain I would give a shit about a new film from him.

Maybe he thought after We Bought a Zoo and Aloha, it was time to take a serious breather.

Re: BEST Cameron Crowe directed film?

Weird I missed this thread originally. Almost Famous is probably my favorite movie of the 2000s. So it goes without saying, Crowe's best for me.

Elizabethtown and We Bought a Zoo get a bad wrap, but aren't bad films. They just aren't in the same league as what came before. Never heard of Aloha. Sounds like I didn't miss much.

^ Aloha is most famous for trying to pass off Emma Stone as someone of Asian descent.

Jimmy Kimmel's takedown of We Bought a Zoo is one of my all-time favorite Oscar bits ever - and this is from someone who has watched every Oscar telecast for the past 40 years.
