too many to list, but here's a stab

- the extended restaurant scene in 'Playtime'

- opening traveling dolly-shot from "Strangers on the Train"

- the crows landing on the jungle gym from "The Birds"

- the end chase sequence from "The Road Warrior"

- the first murder sequence from "Suspiria"

- the ladder fight from "Once Upon A Time in China"

- the poignent open-ended ending in "Friday Night"

- the flood sequence from "Metropolis"

- King Kong vs. the Tyranosaurus Rex from "King Kong"

- the ufo highway scene - Gerry encounters the alien in the kitchen scene - Homage to "Jaws" shot where the shadow of the UFO flies over the truck - original theatrical end-credit song "When You Wish Upon A Star" from "Close Encounters"

- escape from Monstro the whale from Disney's "Pinocchio"

- the ghost in the elevator scene from "The Eye"

- the "flute scene" from "Sex and Zen"

- the dead soldier army/tunnel scene from Kirosawa's "Dreams"

- "Battleship Potemkin" staircase massacre scene

- Jason dueling the skeleton army from "Jason Vs. the Argonaughts"

- the bathroom scene from "The Evil Dead" - amongst all the gore, the scariest scene is the tension and suspense in this one scene.

- the kiss from "Beautiful Thing"

- all the scenes involving Sam and the metal Samurai from "Brazil"

- Dog's (Frank Harper) introduction in "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels"

- ED-209 blasting the hell out of the executive in the board room from "Robocop" (unrated edition) Totally shocking and unrelentless - I can't believe Verhoeven thought he could have gotten an R-rating with that scene intact/"Total Recall's" innocent bystander used as a shield 'escalator scene"

- the exorcism scene from Ken Russell's "The Devils" (can't wait to see the 111 minute uncensored UK cut of the film when and if it get released on DVD)

- all of "Prospero's Books"

- the alien in the crawlspace from "Alien"

- Darkness' emerging from the mirror - dinner table conversation with Lily - Lily's song to the unicorn from "Legend"

- the stunt work and very funny ending of "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World"

- the cat-bus scene from "My Neigbor Totoro"/the train scene from "Spirited Away"

- the score and ending of "Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise"

- the premise, concept and originality of "Battle Royale"

- "Your Song" and "One Day I'll Fly Away" from "Moulin Rouge"

- Natalie Portman's scene stealing performance in "Beautiful Girls"

- the Washington monument scene from "Mars Attack"

- "We are the Knights Who Say 'Ni!'/Black Knight dismemberment "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"

- the tornado sequence from "The Wizard of Oz"

- the tunnel sequence from "Willy Wonka"

- the bell making/ending of "Andrei Rublyov"

- Max Schreck's scary interpretation of the vampire from "Nosferatu" - the imagery and shadows as he ascends the stairs is nightmare inducing.

- John Hurts performance from "The Elephant Man" - the chase in the train station and bathroom scene is both frightening and ultimately sad as he screams "I am not an animal"!

- the stomach churning (literally) ending of "Society" - probably the most twisted and bizarre ending I have ever witnessed.

- "Comfortably Numb" from "Pink Floyd - The Wall" - as well as
"Waiting for the Worms", "Stop", and "Outside the Wall"

- the sword fight amongst the falling leaves from "Hero"

-

- LA street gun fight from "Heat"

- dream sequence/Piccadily Circus mayhem 'end' scene from "American Werewolf in London"

- kiss montage from "Cinema Paradiso"

- Ennio Morricone's haunting score over the opening credits for Bernardo Bertulcci's "1900"

-IMAX's "To Fly" - train coming at ya scene

- "House of Wax" - paddle ball sequence (seen in 3-D, theatrical reissue in the 1980's)

- "Excaliber's" final shot of the Lady of the Lake and her hand effortlessly catching and pulling the sword back in the lake under a huge red sun.

- the canoe ride through the swamp from John Sayle's film "Passion Fish"

- The brief hallucinary dream 'orgy scene' sequence ' from "Angel Heart" (it looks like it came straight out of Dante's Inferno) - director Alan Parker remarked that the daily rushes of this scene made the infamous Mickey Rourke/Lisa Bonet lovemaking scene look tame in comparion.

- Ann-Margret's over the top performance as Tommy's mother in "The Who's Tommy" complete with her getting smothered with chocolate, champagne and brown beans during her singing of: "Tommy Can You Hear Me"/"Smash the Mirror". Tina Turner as the acid queen is another standout.

- "Fantasia's" 'Night on Bald Mountain' sequence.

I could go on all day here...

Exorcist III: The camera pullback and sound showing the Nun/Nurse marching across the screen with the big "head-chopper" going after the young nurse...

The little boy's name is Barry Guiler, not Gerry, by the way... Any thoughts on why Spielberg removed "When You Wish Upon A Star" from the end-credits in his director's cut?

"You thought I loved Rebecca? You thought that? I hated her!"

"I'm singin'... singin' in the Rain"

"You imbecile! You bloated idiot! You stupid fathead!"

"Here's looking at you, kid."

Le Voyage Dans La Lune (aka A Trip To The Moon) There is a particular scene in this strange short.

And of course, the first time we see Lisa Carol Fremont in person.

Come on. Anyone who has a remote interest in film knows which movies these scenes are from

Just got done watching this again:

The "flying" scene from Titanic. Yes, some would call it cheesy, but for my money, the big camera move in front of the ship arcing from port to starboard and wrapping around Jack & Rose is one of the most perfect moments in cinema. Pure, beautiful, magic.

A couple others for consideration (I went through and watched my favorite scenes from several recent Best Picture winners Monday, being Oscar Monday and all):

- The stand-off between Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman at the end of Unforgiven ("You just shot an unarmed man."-Hackman "He shoulda' armed himself."- Eastwood).

- Jody Foster in the dark with Buffalo Bill at the end of Silence of the Lambs. Made my chest tight with anticipation/fear in the theaters. Made my chest tight today.

- The shot of Stallone running up the stairs in Rocky. A cool little moment for the story, and the first use of steadicam in a feature film. Seems like no big thing now, very important though for filmmaking.

- Patton's speech.

Giles picked some of mine...

But I also think that the end scene from Umberto D. Where Flagg runs away from from Umberto after the near train incident is magnificent. (By the way, Flagg is a dog...)

Watership Down. Bright Eyes.

ZOMBIE: and who can't forgot Fulci's love of eyeball violence - the splinter and the eye also takes the cake. The cinematography is also very striking, the emergence of the zombies from between the island trees as they shamble towards the barn is also very effective and frightening.

WATERSHIP DOWN: what a beautiful song and tearful ending.

Renfield (Peter McNicol) in bed, being approached by two of Dracula's lecherous bosomy brides, who are rubbing their ample cleavage against his bedposts: "Ladies! What are you doing to the furniture?!" - Dracula: Dead and Loving It, Mel Brooks, 1995

Also: Spencer Tracy as Jekyll, walking though the London fog trying to whistle "The Emperor's Waltz" but whistling "You should see me dance the polka" instead - Victor Fleming's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941)

Almost every scene of The Good Earth (Sidney Franklin, Victor Fleming, 1937) but especially the one where Paul Muni gives the pearls back to Luise Reiner.

The precise moment in every Jean-Luc Godard film - usually 16 minutes in - when you realize that this one is going to be even more stupendously pointless and profoundly imbecilic than the last one you saw, no matter how much you have steeled yourself for it.

The tail end of the foot massage scene, when Jules says "Let's go get into character." It looks like this:

Tarentino is able to pull of some brilliant scene work of the conversation, without ever showing the characters faces. It's a great shot.
