Saw Gothika last night

I'll keep this short and give no spoilers. I came into this thinking this movie could easily bomb. Despite her good looks I wasn't sure Halle could pull off a leading role.

My opinion is that she holds up well. Partially because she doesn't have to emulate the calm and clinical Dr during the whole film.

Gothika is filled with tense music and audio jolts that heighten the "fear" however the story never really takes off and the ending may disappoint more than a few. I enjoyed the movie however...it was decent and well produced but no single character or scene really stole the show.

All in all it could do well and open the door for more roles for Halle.

Why would anyone want this to tank? It's just a small horror flick. I don't see it as a Halle film (someone I dislike) - I see it as a film by the same people who made House on Haunted Hill, Ghost Ship, and 13 Ghosts. So I'm kinda excited to see it. These films are fun. Nothing brilliant or anything, but entertaining.

No, if the movie does well...Halle will be the first to start in on how wonderful SHE is and now SHE did blah, blah , blah to make the movie better. She makes me sick! I wish nothing but bad luck to her movie career! The movie does look good, but I can't hand over $8 to see it.

Well I guess another thumbs up would seem redundant.

I saw this last night.... I really enjoyed all the Dark Castle flicks so far... not brilliant, but all of them have some great moments and are pretty fun flicks... I thought Gothika was extremely disappointing.

It relies on the same techniques over and over again for scares... a dead girl popping up on screen is only scary a few times.... not 15. The plot is extremely ridiculous and the last 30 minutes have so many laughable moments, it's insane.

The movie does have lots of style and Halle and Robert Downey Jr. do their best with the material, but I was really disappointed with the movie. I thought the trailer made it look like some good creepy fun...but instead got dull, predictable crap.

I'm not too impressed by the trailer, but it could be decent.

Director Mathieu Kassovitz was much hailed for "La Haine" (Hate), a powerful 1995 drama of life in the Parisian housing projects. This time around, he aims for a thriller but is scuttled from the start by an outlandish screenplay: Sebastian Gutierrez, who authored the fine "Judas Kiss" (1999), is the author here of a lame, far-fetched pastiche
full of chintzy lightning, overbearing music and hackneyed effects ripped off from "Repulsion," "Rosemary's Baby"
and "The Shining." There's not a believable moment or plot twist in the whole thing.

(Barry Paris - The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

French director Mathieu Kassovitz shows considerable skill when it comes to setting mood (gloomy and confused)
and keeping members of an audience on their collective toes; there are plenty of honest gotcha moments in Gothika.
Too bad he couldn't apply some of that talent to the story and make it work without healthy doses of red herrings,
leaps of faith and eye-rolling plot twists.

(Chris Kaltenbach - The Baltimore Sun)

. . . . . .

...erm... from what I've heard here and there, America's premier movie critic is hardly interested in boobs...

she and Jennifer Jason Lee do take it off, but according to an article on imdb, they chickened out at the last min to do a full frontal scene.

So all you guys just hate her because of her Oscar speech? Come on, give her a break. She was obviously a little over excited and emotional, and her speech was a little too melodramatic. But does she talk like that in every interview she gives? I don't think so.

I think she is a decent actress. I think she did fine with her role for Monster's Ball. She did suck in a few films I've seen her in, such as X-men and Swordfish.

You guys are treating her like she's Sean Penn.

Do you mean Penelope Cruz, and not Jennifer Jason Leigh? 'Cuz JJL's never been shy about pushin' the bush.

I'll never give her a break! She stole a James Bond movie from me. ;-)
