Infernal Affairs 1, 2, 3......and Miramax

Yes, people. News are brewing that Miramax is considering to pick up all three Infernal Affairs for US release (though at the moment talks is about the 1st one). The 2nd one (prequel) just opened in Hong Kong with a bang - accompanied by strong reviews.

Be afraid, looks like Miramax is looking for another HK film to delay indefinitely.

Spoiler:
Prequel, yay Tony Leung. I wonder if they'll pull an "A Better Tomorrow 2" for the sequel.

I was under the impression that both Infernal Affairs 2 and 3 would be prequels with 3 being a sequel to 2, but still being before 1.

No no no, Infernal Affairs 2 is after 3 but before 1, but Infernal Affairs 3 is before both 2 and 1, except for the prologue which is after 2 but before 1, and the flashback sequence in the middle, which is before 2 and 1... and 3.

Just picked up Pt. I in HK. Unfortunately missed the opening of Pt. II by a week. With the HK versions available or to be available before Miramax can get to them, there's not much to worry about.

Well, that just about clears everything up. Someone please let Mr. Moebius know that we found his Strip.

Maybe they'll consider them prestige pictures and release them largely unmolested or at least with English subs available on the DVD. These aren't action or kung fu movies.

Then again, the HK DVD for IA1 is already perfect, so hang Miramax!

I just saw all three last evening at the New York Film Festival, and only IAI (which is also currently playing in a few NYC theaters) has the Miramax name on it - not IAII or IAIII.

Part 3 is set after Part 1 but 1/2 the movie is flashbacks. Thus, both before and after.

I thought Part 2 was as boring as they come. Part 3 was okay, but the gem of the set is still part 1.

That would actually be kinda interesting (the re-sequence). Of course it would suck for people who have never seen the films.

The first is the best, but I really enjoyed all three, and the cumulative effect is amazing - they all do add up to one long saga.

As as been pointed out, IA2 is a prequel that details how everyone got to where they were in the first movie. The characters of the two leads are played by younger actors in this one, but Tony Leung and Andy Lau return for IA3, which takes place before, during and after IA1.

(IA2 and IA3 will be shown in NYC again later this month at the Walter Reade Theater as part of their Recent Hong Kong Cinema series.)

OK, I got it:

IA1 takes place after IA2. IA2 takes place before IA1 and IA3, whereas IA3 takes place before, during, and after IA1, except for the prologue, which occurs before IA1, IA2, and most of IA3. However since the prologue in IA3 occurs before two-thirds of the rest of IA3, the movie can be considerd its own prequel... which takes place after IA2, which in itself is a prequel to IA1, but takes place after some events in IA3.
