Spy Kids Stomp Lara Croft on Opening Day

Friday's numbers:

1 SPY KIDS 3-D: GAME OVER 3,344 11,650,000 3,484 11,650,000
2 LARA CROFT AND THE CRADLE OF LIFE: TOMB RAIDER 2 3,222 8,646,000 2,683 8,646,000
3 BAD BOYS II 3,202 6,666,000 2,082 73,117,000
4 PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 3,416 6,579,000 1,926 160,281,000
5 SEABISCUIT 1,987 6,235,500 3,138 6,235,500
6 TERMINATOR 3 (T3): THE RISE OF THE MACHINES 2,660 1,412,500 531 133,809,500
7 LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, THE 2,532 1,380,500 545 49,234,500
8 JOHNNY ENGLISH 2,236 1,378,000 616 15,487,000
9 FINDING NEMO 2,025 1,254,500 620 309,985,500
10 HOW TO DEAL 2,319 875,500 378 10,057,500

Wow, the 3-D gimmick just've really drawn them in... I hope they sent out enough glasses to cover this. Or maybe it's because of Sylvester Stallone...

Those are horrible numbers for Tomb Raider. Maybe if they would've put some real ads on tv instead of shilling Jeeps...

Not a bad opening for Seabiscuit. It will probably have great legs. Another good hold for Pirates. T3 will struggle to cross $150 mil at this rate.

Wow, who would've thought that Pirates would hit $200 million this summer!

Also, I am shocked that League is doing as well as it is. It'll probably end up with close to $60 million. That's awesome for a film with such a bizarro premise. I never imagined it would connect at all. Man, I hope Fox hasn't really killed their plans for a 2-disc SE as has been rumoured.

Sad to see the terrible Spy Kids franchise still going strong. Go Pirates!

So, is that take considered good for Seabiscuit, I wonder.
Can't believe Bad Boys (ugh!) inched back over POTC.

Why is it a surprise that spy kids is doing so well? It's a kids film that both parents and childern can enjoy. I'm not surprised at all.

This will be the last of the Spy Kids films for the time being. Robert Rodriguez told the 2 kid stars that he won't be making another sequel of the Spy Kids franchise in the near future (if ever again) - reported on Entertainment Tonight last night.

As much as I like the Spy Kids franchise, I didn't think it would do better than Tomb Raider, let alone number 1 on Friday. I'm not too sure if those numbers will hold up for the rest of the weekend though. Now if Lara Croft were in 3-D, maybe things would be different...

I think Seabiscuit will be a 'word of mouth' flick. When I went, the audience clapped at least 3 times during the movie. Maybe it'll never reach # 1, but I'm sure it'll stay in the top 5 for a while.

Seabiscuit is on less than 2,000 theaters, more than a 1/3 less than the two other new openers, so I'd say the film is playing to as packed theatera as Spy Kids, if not a little more.

I'm not completely surprised by the lack of Tomb Raider's take, I didn't recall anyone clammoring for a sequel after the first one and the universally bad reviews didn't help anyone on the edge come in.

Figured Tomb Raider was not going to do as well as predicted. Sequel few wanted, in a summer overloaded with unwanted action sequels -- burnout has hit. For once I appear to have actually been right!

After going to a 100% sold out 11:30am showing on opening day, I was surprised when I read online that people were picking L Croft to be number 1 at the B.O. and SK 3D to only make 14 million for the whole weekend.

My family have gone to opening day for all the SK movies. We have enjoyed all the of the films (the 1st is still the best) and they have had positive statements concerning family, friendships and forgiveness.

I do not believe they need another movie (maybe a tv series), but the boxoffice shows there is a market for movies that the whole family can enjoy.

Spy Kids 3D (Plot, actors, writing...) = 2 stars
SPy Kids 3D with 3D Glasses = 3.5 Stars (Fun and different)

Alot of competition, this is the first time I've seen alot of big films in the top ten, most of those films would earn more if released another time.

No surprise there - I don't see Laura Croft doing much at all this weekend.

I just saw Spy Kids 3D and man the 3D sucked!!! Back in the 80s when I saw Jaws it was so much better!!!! And those 3D rides like Spiderman and T2 have great 3D

This is a let down as for as the 3D thing goes. Nothing really come right at you and hung in your face. Nothing came from behind you.

I thought the 3D would have been BETTER, I was let down bad.
I have seen better 3D comic books

Tomb Raider will make about $30 million this opening weekend. That's a decent opening considering the 1st one wasn't a huge box office draw.

Nemo still has a bit to go to overcome Lion King, I'm really hoping it can score the extra $15 mil or whatever it takes.

What are you talking about? The first one made $47 million in its opening weekend, which isn't chump change now and was even less so two years ago, and it went on to make $130 million. It was the #15 box office hit of the year, just behind the first Fast and the Furious. Sure, it didn't do "LOTR" or "Harry Potter" bucks (the top two movies of 2001) but it was obviously enough of a draw to make a sequel.

It's curious that, IMHO, some of this summer's most underwhelming openings for sequels have all been women-centered movies -- Tomb Raider 2, Charlie's Angels 2, Legally Blonde 2 -- it looks like all three will gross less than their originals. Wonder if that says anything about anything?

Wow, I hope those aren't the true numbers by Sunday night. Spy Kids 3D is #1? Hollywood has gone to hell.

why is it surprising? spy kids 2 opened up at #3 behind signs and XXX. It's a kids film in the middle of summer. simple logic will show that it will make plenty bank.
