Most advertising EVER for a summer movie

Charlies Angels: Full Throtle may take the crown. I don't think I've ever seen more advertising, tie-ins or just pure hype building ever for a summer movie.

I mean I can't go 2 minutes on TV, radio, internet without being bombarded by it.

I think X2 probably had the most ads this summer between the actual film commercials and its many tie-ins such as Baskins Robbins, the game, the toys, etc.

As for all time hype, Episode I has to take the cake for that one. Star Wars was everywhere in summer '99.

I don't Disney may take the cake for any of their recent stuff. They got tie-ins across the globe. And unless you have kids, or are a kid, it might not seem very prevalent.

I would have to say Pearl Harbor. Every where I turned 2 years ago there was an ad, trailer, magazine article, or whatever else you could think of promoting the film. Disney certainly knows how to promote the hell out of a movie IMO. It does get people into the theatres it seems.

Phantom Menace, hands down...

The Pepsi promotion was key, the midnight toy launch and every night the news had some story about people waiting for weeks to be first on line.

I don't know about Star Wars. They had plenty of tie-ins, but little actual advertising on TV/radio. Heck I didn't even see a preview for the movie at theaters, and not one TV spot until months after the release. For that reason, I'd have to think it isn't that advertised.

Tie-ins are advertising. If they are not what is the purpose if not to advertise the movie?

I remember BATMAN RETURNS had a ton of advertising.

For the LEAST amount of advertising for a big summer movie, my vote goes to TERMINATOR 2. I remember the week it came out (which was also July 4th weekend), I was suprised that it was going to be released.

Phantom Menace, without a doubt, a total orgy of promotion on that one.

For me, I think the most hype I ever saw for a movie was Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. It's the only movie I can remember that had featurettes shown in prime time.

Sinbad! Ok, maybe not advertising but nationwide movie theateres are trying to promote it in the theater. The one that I work at there is a big ship made out of cardboard and raffs hanging from the ceiling and lots of other stuff and activities and games are being held. Im also suppose to dress up like a pirate or something so dont come and see me. Its embarrasing!

I realize that tie-ins are advertising, although ironically something that studios don't have to be pay for. Star Wars had toys (although so do most big movies these days) and everything Pepsi (the soda, the fast food chains) and of course it was on the news and people were selling merchandise (clothes, backpacks, etc..), but ironically it what Fox (or more acurately Lucas) paid seemed to be minimal. People actually pay them to make toys and so forth.

And my overall point is, that even though they had the tie-ins, they had no TV/radio ads. And I'd think the most advertised movie ever, the topic at hand, would have both.

Theater's do that with kid's movies constantly. Like, they'll get the adverts on the XL bag of popcorn and various cardboard cutouts throughout the theater.

I remember the first time I heard of tremendous movie marketing was The Last Action Hero.

They even wanted to put it's name on a rocket.

After that, the other of note, was Godzilla. They were really gung-ho about it. Too bad the movie flopped, because after that, event movies sort of lost their steam.

yeah godzilla was huge in marketing but Hulk has to be close for just over all CRAP that is being "Hulk Branded" outside of toys..

I mean Star Wars brought out the gear but I think we have all seen the Hulk worked into so many adds of late. NBA final had hulk ads for the NBA.. Mt Dew hulk ads.. Never mind all the junk food that has been "hulked".. Frozen pizza, candy, even seen hulk cereal and of course the Green Hulk version of Heresy Chocolate syrup.. It's green Chocolate syrup?!?!!? Ok I don't have any kids but that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard as far as a food angle. Who wants green milk (well i guess kids might)..

http://www.hersheys.com/thehulk/products.asp

of course I keep thinking Godzilla was the same way with tons of items
