Just because the Academy likes the performance, it doesn't mean the viewer will like it. The Academy has liked many movies over the years that I think were crap. Its totally up to the viewer.
True. Examples: Gwynneth Paltrow, Helen Hunt, Julia Roberts. To me, their "award winning" performances were mediocre at best.

I think Sissy Spacek has given strong performances in her 30 + year career.

From what I know, the tv version is more of a translation from the original book
told in flashback mode
the main supporting character is black
Spoiler:
Carrie doesn't die

You don't know much about acting, do you? Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were nominated for Oscars for their performances. Spacek gave an excellent understated performance as the shy, mistreated Carrie White. Spacek has been nominated numerous times and won for "Coal Miner's Daughter".

The supporting cast of Amy Irving and Betty Buckley gave good performances as well.
And Nancy Allen.

I LOVE Nancy Allen!

I get so sick and tired of people bashing Marisa Tomei winning for My Cousin Vinny.

I am glad the voters recognized a comedic performance. And she can act. (MCV and In the Bedroom come to mind)

On topic:

Carrie was great. Compare this to SK's Thinner and tell me what you think after that. Sissy Spacek was excellent as usual --- and that blonde headed whore pissed me off. Any movie that gets to my emotions to hate someone really is good.

Favorite Stephen King horror adaptation EVER! Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were great. Travolta and Allen acted just like snotty-a$$ed high school kids (even though they were probably 40 at the time!) This was also the first feature film for a lot of the actors. I have seen this movie hundreds of times and it is definitely my 2nd favorite of all time (after Grease!) :-)

If you think it sucked you obviously never saw...

Maxium Overdrive
Hearts of Alantis
Christine
The Second Half of 'IT'
The Graveyard Shift (Easily the worst King adapation / movie ever!)
Carrie II
The Shining (TV adapation)
Or many other ones.

*note: I did not mention ' Storm of the Century' ..I love that one! *

I haven't seen Blow Out in a long time.

For Jolt only. Slight sexual content.
Spoiler:
I'm thinking of busting out the nudie pix now.
She was hottest on my twin bed.

Agreed. She was quite funny in "Vinny" and gave an outstanding performance in "Bedroom"...along with Wilkinson and Spacek.

Kubrick's The Shining is excluded, because it's hardly a Stephen King adaptation. Great movie though.
Are you including "Shawshank Redemption" in that hate fest. That movie is perhaps the closest to book adaptions of any of King's work.

Shes cute but I love that shes such a genre queen. The Depalma thrillers, the Robocops, Poltergiest. And she gave the definitive Hooker With A Heart Of Gold performance in Dressed To Kill. Shes just cool, I dunno why.

Carrie rocks. And it could never be considered the worst King adaptation as long as a print of "Graveyard Shift" or "The Mangler" still exists.

Carrie is a masterpiece - funny, scary, moving, and disturbing. I actually just watched this last week, and even after multiple viewings, it is no less entertaining or powerful.

My vote for worse King adaptation would have to be the entire Children of the Corn series.
