Movies you like, but SHOULD NOT recommend

I refer to movies that you like but unless the person asking for recommendations knows your taste well enough, you really shouldn't tell them to watch.

My picks:

-Any David Lynch movie
-Just about any Oliver Stone movie
-Fight Club
-Drop Dead Gorgeous
-Any kind of anime
-Most Tim Burton movies

Why Fight Club? Ive yet to meet a person who doesnt love that movie. And Oliver Stone movies? Well they won some awards so they are pretty widely enjoyed.

I don't really get the question And your choices throw me for a loop also. I mean, Tim Burton movies? The guy has made enormous blockbuster movies, most people like him. 9 out of 10 people love Fight Club. Oliver Stone is pretty popular, & Anime is the most popular form of Animation in the world, so I'm quite confused.

It sounds like all you mean is, movies that you like but most people will not, , you just worded it very weird.

I've lived in quite a few areas... Ohio, Nebraska, South Dakota (was miiltary). And I know a ton of people and constantly talk to new people.... movies always come up in conversation.

With that said, I'd say 50% of the people I've met like Fight Club. Most women I know hate it, and the guys I know that don't like it - for reasons that don't make sense to me.

As for Tim Burton films, you have to appreciate films as an art - cinematography, use of color, etc. Most people that I know that don't like Tim Burton films, don't like his moods, and they're a bit weird and off-color. Have to admit, the dude is weird.

Good list, I would add Kevin Smith films which I enjoy but I recommended Dogma to a casual friend once and haven't heard the end of it yet.

Kurosawa films
Fellini films
The Three Colors Trilogy

All the movies the original poster named are pretty mainstream enough to recommend to friends.

I guess you don't know many girls (it's not quite universal, but I've met about one girl who has seen this movie that didn't detest it--not just dislike, but detest).

After Hours. I've recommended it to people, and had them thank me for it, but you really need to know their taste.

I've learned not to recommend Spike Jonze's movies to people. I loaned Being John Malkovich to a friend who returned it saying he couldn't even get through 30 minutes. I told my brother to watch Adaptation. He hated it. These are two of my favorite fims. I guess I just don't know the right people.

Actually, my wife loved Adaptation. She gave it 5 out of 5 stars. She never ever ever ever does that. At least I chose my wife wisely.

[sarcasm]whoa - you guys are wild - what a controversial list of underground cinema[/sarcasm]

I usually recommend the sickest and most twisted or bizarre movies to my friends and they usually like them. If I can't relate to someone on a movie level, then we'll never really make it as good friends. I worked in a video store like 10 years ago and I used to recommend sick, twisted and bizarre stuff to my customers and if they didn't like it then they can just go back to scanning the New Release section for the latest Val Kilmer flick.

I don't know - with the exception of the Hunted, I'd recommend any of the films mentioned here. If I like a movie, I recommend it... I don't see why I shouldn't... screw them if they don't have the same taste as me.

I showed Donnie Darko to a bunch of my friends one night and they all thought it was stupid... so I don't recommend it to anyone unless they have the same taste in movies I do...

The Hunted was kickass. William Friedkin gave us two of the best, most brutal fight scenes ever filmed. How do people respond to this? They don't go see it.

As for movies that I am scared to let people borrow, Larry Clark's Bully comes to mind. I let my conservative, naive friend borrow this and it thankfully didn't drive him into a deep depression.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and almost any Terry Gilliam movie that isn't Time Bandits are also risks.

Dead Alive
Eraserhead
Lost Highway
Evil Dead 2
A Clockwork Orange

Nurse Betty - I don't really know anyone who likes this like me.

Moulin Rouge - If you can't stand the fast editing and the out-of-this-world experience, then you'll probably hate this.

Adaptation - If you can't catch the irony, then you'll wonder why you saw this film.

Final Fantasy - You know how people hate this film.

Jackie Brown - If you're not familiar with the blaxploitation scene, then a lot will probably go over your head.

Vanilla Sky - Some people just don't get it. But it's still more understandable than some of Kubrick's films.

That's a great one, most people will think you're a raging psycho for suggesting it unless they're open-minded.

I'll never suggest any of the following, even though they're amoung my favorites:

8 1/2- three-hour long, non-linear, badly misdubbed Italian drama-comedy from the sixties...no I don't think I'll be passing this one on.

Sex-and-Zen (Carnal Prayer Mat)- outrageous lite porn from HK about a guy getting his dick replaced with a horse's. While it is hilarious, it's not the knid of thing I'll be talking about at lunch tomorrow with the guys.

Kubrick's Lolita: fantastic pedophilia story. It's probably one of the sickest Hollywood-made movies ever and I love it. Pretty much any Kubrick film (with the possible exception of "Full Metal Jacket") is not really easy to recommend.

Hell Comes to Frogtown
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
The Beastmaster
Krull

There's a lot of movies I like that I would never recommend to anyone.

Funny. I have the exact reaction. Most girls I know love the film, including me. It's on my shelf to stay, no matter how many other DVDs are sold back to the store.

On the other hand, I'm one of the few people I know who detests anime. And before you tell me "You just haven't seen the right anime." I have seen the gamut from cheesy Dragonball Z crap to Miyazake crap (though the man is an artist and his movies are visually stunning, but that is all), to Akira, to Ghost in the Shell, to Bubblegum Crisis, and on and on and on. I simply don't find it appealing and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
