While not on DVD yet, I would be very cautious about recommending Irreversible. That's the kind of movie that will not only screw with the veiwer, but also make him/her wonder if you are right in the head if they aren't into film.

I loved Moulin Rouge and Adaptation but I find them hard to recommend since most people don't "get" them. The same goes for many classics.

Let's see..

I've recommended the following movies and they was hated by each and every person..

Suspiria .. "Bad acting.."

25th Hour ...."Too Boring"..

ManHunter ... "Silence of the Lambs was better!"

Mullholand Dr ... "What the hell happened durin' that movie?!!?! "

A Clockwork Orange .. ." Too violent!"

Cannibal Ferox ... "GROSS! Was that a live animal!??!"

Auditin. .. "What? What? It's subtitled?!?!"

Seven Samurai .. "Sub-titled and LONG?"

The list goes on and on. I've just realized that no one I know has any taste in cinema what-so ever.

On the other hand, I'm one of the few people I know who detests anime. And before you tell me "You just haven't seen the right anime." I have seen the gamut from cheesy Dragonball Z crap to Miyazake crap (though the man is an artist and his movies are visually stunning, but that is all), to Akira, to Ghost in the Shell, to Bubblegum Crisis, and on and on and on. I simply don't find it appealing and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Ah, but are you watching it dubbed? That could be your problem :P

I eagerly recommended The Royal Tenenbaums to numerous people, and none of them liked it. I don't do that much anymore.

I absolutely love Barry Lyndon, every gorgeous, glorious moment, but when I recommend it to people I always include caveats.

Ah, I forgot about that one. I've had the same problem. Too many people I know don't like Wes Anderson or Spike Jonze. What's the world coming too? Uncultured Swine!

Of course! You need to tailor your recommendations to the person. I wouldn't show Grand Illusion to a class of sixth-graders, nor would I show I Spit on your Grave at the retirement village.

I didn't like "Fight Club" at all and can't stand Oliver Stone Movies.

I'd go with some of the ones mentioned already.

Lynch, Kubrick, Kurosawa, Fellini.

I would even add Hitchcock to that list.

This is probably the saddest thread I've ever seen... it really makes my heart weep. Some many great films, so little appreciation by friends and relatives.

I have had bad experiences with recommending films to people - I showed my parents Magnolia (which I love to death) and they weren't impressed to say the least. My father's reaction to the film amounted to an inane comment about "frogs falling from the sky!"

Thankfully, though, I know a few people who can appreciate a Fellini or a Buñuel (my favorite director) or even a Resnais. I once lent Salò to a classmate, and not only did she love it, she did so for all the right reasons. Suffice to say that this was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

My wife thought that she would hate Fight Club until she heard me watching it from the other room and was pulled into it. From another room! Just hearing the Narrator was enough to get her interested. She loves it.

I think Grouch said it best.. you tailor your recommendations to people depending on who they are. I tend to know what my (good) friends' tastes in movies are. In fact, I turned a friend on to a bunch of movies that he fell in love with: Amadeus, LOTR (yes, I had to convince him to see it), etc.

There are a bunch of people I would never recommend Fight Club to, and a bunch that I would.
