Jaws wouldn't be successful in today's xXx/2 Fast 2 Furious/Scooby Doo/Adam Sandler generation. When The Exorcist was re-released, a lot of teeny boppers laughed their heads off throughout the whole thing. Same with The Others.

If the children of America are its future, then it's going to be a very bleak future.

I consider deaths 1 and 2 both part of the intro/hook. Then the big chunk of character development starts. How long from the little boy's death until the next death?

I tend to agree with this statement. I remember watching a featurette in Narc DVD and the director Joe Carnahan (well, pretty much as I remembered it) said, young and bright filmmakers in the 70s and in the present have made a groundbreaking result with their movie. But the differences is, audiences in the 70s has the same wavelength with the director back then, while in the present, audiences have the different wavelength with the director.

That was one sad fact, imo.

May look fake, but the good story really makes you forget taht aspect of the movie. That wouldn't work today I fear.

I know.

Believe me, JAWS and its fake looking, antiquated, mechanical shark was 100x scarier than the "realistic" CGi sharks of DEEP BLUE SEA.

And I'm no "CGI LOOKS BAD SNOB".

What about "Close Encounters" or "2001." I don't know if those were "summer" releases, but I don't think they would do very well at all in today's market.

"Close Encounters" is one of my favorite movies and some of my friends think it's sooo boring. I'm on the edge of my seat throughout most of the film. "Jaws" is most defanitely up there too.

I'm grateful that a local art house is having a special director's showcase this year. They are going to be showing "Jaws" and "Close Encounters" on a big screen. I can't wait!!

But the vast majority of the sharks in Deep Blue Sea were mechanical.

I think Jaws would do just as good today as it did then, maybe even better.

ok, whatever..

You must admit that although they were more realistic...AND mechanical, they were still not as scary

I actually liked Deep Blue Sea due to the great job they did with the robotic sharks, if sharks as realistic looking as those in Deep Blue Sea were used in Jaws I think it would have been even scarier. Deep Blue Sea, however, I did not find scary, it was more an action movie.
