Weekend Box-Office (5/30-6/1)

Looks like "Nemo" is Disney/Pixar's largest opening now. They just keep getting bigger. What do you think "Matrix Reloaded" will finish out at? I'm guessing $275 million. "Wrong Turn" turned out to be a wrong idea. "The In-Laws" makes it two for two for Michael Douglas (bomb). "Beckham" is still going strong!!

1 Finding Nemo $70,600,000 / $70,600,000

2 Bruce Almighty $35,618,000 / $135,685,000

3 The Italian Job $19,300,000 / $19,300,000

4 The Matrix Reloaded $15,040,000/ $232,050,000

5 Daddy Day Care $6,800,000 / $82,000,000

6 X2: X-Men United $5,025,000 / $199,293,000

7 Wrong Turn Fox $5,010,000 / $5,010,000

8 The In-Laws $3,660,000 / $14,440,000

9 Down with Love $1,575,000 / $17,156,000

10 Bend It Like Beckham $1,025,000 / $19,154,000

I really think that the biggest surprise here is that "The Italian Job" actually beat out M:R. I really didn't think Job had that much going for it.

I was about to say I'm surprised by M:R fading so much, until I saw it's already made $232 mil. Glad to see Italian Job doing well - the sneak preview probably helped with word of mouth. No surprise with Bruce up there, but I didn't expect Nemo to do $70mil+...I wanted to see it, but didn't want to put up with the crowds this weekend.

I really enjoyed "The Italian Job" too. But given the competition in the next few weeks, word of mouth is really going to have to save this one. It was estimated to earn $23 million by boxofficemojo.com. I'm guessing it'll probably top off around $60-75 million. Which is fine (didn't "The Score" make around that much?). Still, I'd would have like to have seen "IJ" do $100 million

I thought Finding Nemo would do more than $70M - still impressive though.

So I guess with a few more days Reloaded will be the #1 r rated movie of all time. Poor Foley.

I, too, do not expect Nemo to drop off nearly as much as other films do. Repeat business will keep this one chugging quite a long time.

Also, I don't think adults are quite as embarrassed as they used to be to see an animated film without kids in tow. I mean, Nemo has midnight showings at some theaters. This would have been unthinkable 10 years ago.

I honestly thought Down With Love would have done better than it has. It was quite funny and I saw it in a mostly-packed theater and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. I guess I assumed word-of-mouth would have helped it - couldn't have been more wrong either.

One thing to remember with Finding Nemo and other "G" rated movies is that they are family films, and its doesn't cost $8-10 for a childs ticket. Its tallies like $$$ that make me wish they had an attendence component to the box office grosses.

I'm very surprised that M:R is fading so quickly. Yeah, it's made a bunch of cash, but it's not going to end up anywhere near Spiderman. That's kinda strange.

How is that strange? First of all it's rated R, which cuts it's audience significantly, espically since it's a movie made for tweens that's rated for adults. Secondly, the movie has been gathering horrible word of mouth, which may not be a big factor as the horrible word of mouth is typically "It sucks but you have to see it at least once!".. many people were let down and will not go for a repeat. A movies 3rd and 4th week (and beyond) takes are based upon repeat viewings and people getting friends/family that may not go to the movies often to go. The repeat viewings is hurting it the most simply becuase the demograph that enjoys repeats the most aren't allowed in.

It's broken records and made plenty of money. It'll probably be the highest grossing R rated movie of all time by the middle of the week. I think, in the studio's minds, and in mine, and probably many others, was that it was going to break more records than it did, or at least cross $300 easily.

Where exactly do tickets cost $10? New York City. I think most places I go (in several states), adult tickets are $7 max.

Here's in San Antonio, tickets can range from $8.50 to $7.00 for an evening show. However we do have a local theater that shows all their films for about $4 from 4-6 PM everyday (the Early Evening Special) I've tried to go but they've always been sold out.

I'm going to try again today or tomorrow.

8.50 for an evening show, and 6.00 for kids and all matinee prices where I'm going tomorrow.

Yeah, New York City and there's no matinees in Manhattan. I believe LA is in the $10 range too.

My rant, Mayor Bloomberg and Gov Pataki are alienating New Yorkers even more by raising taxes from 8.25% to 8.625%; not only that, they're reinstating the tax on clothing which was previously tax free if it was under $110 (watch the mass exodus of shoppers to New Jersey again).

Bloomberg will probably fine me for posting on this board just like he fines ppl for sitting on milk crates, sitting on the subway steps, taking up 2 seats on a subway train at 2 AM, and for feeding the pigeons, among other things. By far the 2 worst Republican leaders ever.

Not to get too far off track, but Bloomburg was a lifelong Democrat who ran on the Republican ticket to get elected. In his actions, he's much more of a Democrat.

Yup, to what he said.
As for me I'm kind of disappointed in "Wrong Turn's" numbers. I was hoping this might revive the old school horror genre.
