If they cast Walken, I'd laugh my ass off the entire picture.

Agreed. This movie does not need to be made, but if it were, the entertainment factor of Walken playing Wonka would be worth it on its own.

No, I'm quite happy with the scrumdidlyumptious 1971 film.

If Burton keeps up this trend of remaking 33-year-old films every 3 years, what's next - Tim Burton's Chinatown in 2007?

I can't believe no one's brought it up yet, but WILL SMITH would be a PERFECT Willy Wonka for the 21st century!

Why not have Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes do a comeback as Jay Wonka and Silent Willy ?

I can totally picture it now :

Jay : Come on Comme all you little f**k faces. I've got candy up your ass you bunch of dipshit motherf***s! Tell'em Silent WIlly

Silent Willy : ...

Jay : Yeah shut yo face you fat**s ********er! You already ate half of the candies.

Silent Willy : ...

That could definitely be a different take on the character.

The latest from Entertainment Weekly:

Willy or Won't He?

Johnny Depp is poised to play Willy Wonka. He's the frontrunner to star in longtime collaborator Tim Burton's remake by Gary Susman

Johnny Depp, who most recently showed off his ability to be both charming and slightly creepy in the current ''Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,'' may soon get to use that skill playing Willy Wonka. According to Variety, he's now the frontrunner to play the mysterious confectioner in Warner Bros. upcoming version of ''Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.''

It's easy to see why; not only is he coming off one of the biggest hits of his career with ''Pirates,'' but he's also a favorite leading man of the director, Tim Burton, for whom he's starred in such movies as ''Edward Scissorhands,'' ''Ed Wood,'' and ''Sleepy Hollow.'' Plus, Warner Bros. hopes to turn the movie into a Broadway musical, and while it's not clear that the film will also be a musical (like the 1971 ''Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory''), Depp has proven, with his band P, that he's not without musical talent.

Depp is a terrible choice for Wonka, but who could foresee this, what with him and Burton joined at the hip?

Depp 'offered Willy Wonka role'

Depp has worked with director Tim Burton on three other films
Actor Johnny Depp, the star of Pirates of the Caribbean, has been offered the role of Willy Wonka in a new film, according to reports.
Depp has been offered the part by director Tim Burton, US film magazine Variety said.

If Depp accepts, the film would start shooting next year.

The film will be the second based on the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. The 1971 version starred Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka.

Dahl was said to be unimpressed with the 1971 film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, despite adapting his book for the screen himself.

The film is to be produced by Warner Bros and Plan B, the production company whose partners include Brad Pitt and wife Jennifer Aniston.

Mystery factory

If Depp accepts, it will be the fourth film has made with Burton, after Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and Sleepy Hollow.

The story is about a reclusive chocolate manufacturer who opens his mysterious factory to the winners of golden tickets secreted in a handful of his chocolate bars.

One of them is won by Charlie, a poor boy who lives with his parents and grandparents.

Earlier reports had said that controversial rock star Marilyn Manson would play Willy Wonka in Burton's version of the film.

Depp, 40, has already had one of the biggest hits of the summer with the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean, which has topped the film charts in both the UK and the US.

He has also recently made the films J.M Barrie's Neverland and Secret Window, Secret Garden.

It's a toss up..

Johnny Depp - He can do almost any role. He has been 'Ed Wood', 'Edward Sissorhands' and many more roles. The man is simply great.

Christopher Walken - He has some quirky humor about him. A presence , almost like that is not quite right....

I agree, I think Depp is probably the most versatile actor out there. He seems too young to play Wonka, so I wonder if there will be some aging make-up.....and I hope it isn't awful.

And as for Walken....I still think he should be Grandpa Joe (not Wonka).

I think Johnny Depp would make a great Willy Wonka. He's finally getting a lot of the recognition that he deserves. Also, his collaborations with Tim Burton have been excellent so far so I'm definitely interested in seeing it.

kinda off-topic, but what was it about the original film that R. Dahl didn't like?
