Just saw the trailer for this (it's at http://www.apple.com/trailers/miramax/zatoichi.html). It looks incredible, and I've only heard great things about it. I'm so excited for this.

I bought this DVD a couple weeks ago but haven't watched it yet (been very busy with college finals). Can't wait to see it.

It's really a great flick. Saw it a couple of times already. Love Beat's work.

This movie is awesome, and when the violence starts, forget it.

Very good film, but not surprisingly (knowing Kitano), quite different from the original Zatoichi films. It has those bizarre little touches that are uniquely Kitano. I wasn't thrilled with some of the shaky looking CGI blood and gore, but other than that, I have no complaints with the film. The DVD is very nice too.

Which DVD do you have? I bought the R3 HK 2-disc set and it's awesome. The packaging is great.

I bought the R2 Japanese one. It has really nice packaging too. The downside is that the extensive extras do not have English subs. (how about the HK disc?)

No subs on the HK release either, which sucks because the supplements look pretty in depth.

The movie is not bad. Not great either though. Lots of stuff thrown in their to make it more artistic, but it falls flat in its attempt in that area.

The CGI blood as well as angling for some of the cuts and stabs are quite bad in some areas, i.e., no, you're not very convincing with the stab behind him, camera depth trick.

But, the movie is still entertaining.

It played at regular theatres here in Canada (only in major cities though). Seville was the distributor up here though, so I'm not sure how Miramax will handle the release.

I can't wait to see this. I hope that it plays in some of the regular theatres in Denver.

Saw this a few weeks ago. It's outstanding. Something I didn't know: Takashi Miike was offered this film first, and when he declined it was given to Beat.

Wow, I didn't know that either. The mind boggles at what kind of Zatoichi film Miike would have come up with.

Zatoichi (Kitano) Release Cities?

Does anybody know for sure if this will open and play in the DC/Baltimore area? If so, any ideas regarding specific theaters?

I saw on Miramax's Ichi site (justice-is-blind.com) release info for NY, San Fran, Boston, etc...but no DC/Baltimore. But, I have seen indications that it is supposed to play in the area. Anybody have any info?

Secondly, can anyone confirm/deny the films cut/uncut status? I read a post by someone on another board who saw it and claimed it was uncut. Confirmations anyone?

Thx!

The US print I saw earlier this year was uncut.

Wow

Cool. Thanks.

I definitely didn't expect to hear that regarding a Miramax distributed asian film. I was warily expecing a hip-hop soundtrack, very bad dubbing, and the obligatory heavy use of scissors.

Now, if only I can find theater/location info...

you can try using movies.yahoo.com or fandango, to look for a bunch of theaters in your area in a ____ mile radius and see if anyone is showing it.

Its coming to San Diego if anyone is interested. I rented it from Nicheflix but I might go to a screening anyway.

same here, rented it from Nicheflix as well, opens in DC this weekend. Interestingly, with Landmark awhile back really pushing this film, they don't get it the first week, Loew's Dupont Circle theatre gets it.
