Your Digital Self

This is a Matrix question in general. How the hell can someone have an imagine in the Matrix (called their digital self) if they've never even seen what they look like? Remember they are in pods from birth so how could Neo end up looking the same in M1? Except for the hair of course.

It's just a given. It would be dumb to have a movie where the hero looked different in the Matrix and in real life.

The Matrix can probably reasonably assign an "avatar" for each person based on instantaneous DNA analysis. Everything would be the same, except for superficial things like hair style -- as seen in the film.

Do I smell a Neal Stephenson/Snowcrash fan?

You have no control over your RSI(Residual Self Image) Neo has undergone changes internally that reflect in his updated RSI. Trinity and Morpheus have stayed the same.

Ahhh my RSI would be

A nice Canali Italian suit with a Panama Hat. Italian shoes and classy shades. tisk tisk

Uhhh.... Either I'm missing something or this question is unnecessary.

Those who weren't born on Zion are born on Matrix at some point. They start out like a baby, like every other baby. They grow, and they think how they want to look like. They look in the mirror and know this. This is their RSI. What they think they want to look like. Just like the memories of the Matrix are still in an unplugged human's brain, so is the RSI.

When someone like Neo is unplugged from the Matrix, they still retain that same RSI. You can notice in the first film that Neo's first representation of his RSI, he's in normal clothes, perhaps a little more perfect than his usual self (before being unplugged). Then when they enter the Matrix itself his RSI has been updated to the sunglasses and trenchcoat, perhaps to match the others and maybe because he wanted to look cool.

Actually no, I've never heard of that book before you mentioned it.

I think you missed the point. Body, face, genetically-determined things -- not clothes or sunglasses.

Well IMO I don't think RSI extends to genetic things like facial appearance and things like that. If you notice in the movies everyone pretty much looks the same in the Matrix and real world except for their clothes, hairstyles, and such.
