I haven't seen his Brief History of Time though.

Also Hoop Dreams, American Movie, Hearts of Darnkess, Crumb, both the Paradise Lost films...i'm sure there are others i can't think of.

Streetwise and Gizmo, absolutely. I wish we had DVDs. Has anyone else seen First Contact? It's basically amateur footage of a group of Australians, brothers, gold-hunting in the New Guinea highlands in the 1930s. They run into primitive people who were previously uncontacted by "civilization." Some believed the Aussies, being white, were ghosts.

I was lucky enough to track down a laserdisc of Streetwise in the mid '90s, so I'm not hurtin' for a DVD. I wish Bell would film an update; I'd like to know where some of these kids are today. The film has a very moving Tom Waits score.

Yep, I've got the Streetwise LD, and an old VHS of Gizmo. I remember a magazine article, possibly Life, with a story on Rat & company. Rat was carrying a .45 around, not a very good indicator for Rat's future.

Is that the Life article of '83 that inspired the film, or a follow-up? Rat was the most charismatic and memorable of the kids.

Gizmo I haven't seen in ages. I remember it being hilarious and having a splendid score.

I don't remember, except that Rat looked about the same age as in the film. I expect it was the former.

Errol Morris is my favorite filmmaker - hands down.

I really want to see Grey Gardens - but can't find a copy anywhere. I've scoured local video stores and NetFlix doesn't have it. Seen it? Recommend it?

Ambush In Mogadishu

A lot of the post 9/11 documentaries were excellent. I saw one (cant think of the name) about the architect who built the towers and how they were not designed to have a jumbo jet crash into them (duh?). He felt really guilty it was very sad

I love Hoop Dreams. Simply one of the best movies for me ever!
I will add
E-Dreams - a story of the rise and fall of Kozmo.com . The CEO was such a conceited prick that I rooted for his demise.

a few month's back I saw a wonderful French documentaryat the American Film Institute/Discovery Channel Documentary Film Festival on a French teacher and three grades he teaches in a small country school. It's my second favourite film of this year. New Yorker is the stateside distrib, so there's a chance it will get a wide release later in the year. It has become the highest grossing documentary in France and the European/UK critics have given this unanimous praise - I can wholeheartedly agree that this is a wonderful film.

On another note, with the success of "Winged Migration", I noticed awhile back in Variety that the makers of the BBC television series "Big Blue", are planning to cull through some 7,000 hours of unused footage and compile it into a feature length film, that should be amazing!.

The Up Movies (7up,14up,21up,28up,35up and 42 up), I was born within a couple years of these people and its like i have known them for a while lol. Very good look at the British class system and what these people became when they grew up.

Where is the box set lol

Best documentaries

I just joined an online DVD rental service, and with this larger selection, I'm itching to watch some documentaries.

So far, all I have in my queue is For All Mankind (Criterion) and Africa: The Serengeti (IMAX).

Would anyone have any other suggestions for me? Just FYI, I am more interested in nature/science documentaries than historical ones, but I can take exceptions.
