Pretend your an Oscar voter...

What would you choose as the Top 5 films of the year?

Best 5 Directors?

Best Picture:
The Last Samurai
Return of the King
Mystic River
Seabiscuit
Cold Mountain (this 5th spot may change once I see more movies in the next month)

Best Director:
Peter Jackson - Return of the King
Edward Zwick - The Last Samurai
Clint Eastwood - Mystic River
Gary Ross - Seabiscuit
Richard Linklater - The School of Rock (best child performances I've ever seen, that has to count for something)

Best Actor: (Threw in 6 because some of them would be Supporting Actors)
Ken Watanabe - The Last Samurai
Tom Cruise - The Last Samurai
Jeff Bridges - Seabiscuit
William H. Macy - Seabiscuit
Sean Penn - Mystic River
Kevin Bacon - Mystic River

Best Actress: (Had to throw in supporting actors just to get to 5, bad year for actresses IMO.)
Nicole Kidman - Cold Mountain
Julia Roberts - Mona Lisa Smile
Marcia Gay Harden - Mystic River
Uma Thurman - Kill Bill
Renee Zellweger - Cold Mountain

don't shoot me but...

I think the thread title is slightly misleading given the content of the first post. I clicked on the thread expecting a "predict the nominees" thread and instead the op seems to mean more a "what are you favourite 5 movies/performances in 2004" thread.

It is quite known that these are very different questions and it's obvious that grimfarrow answered the first question while jan h the latter.

Does this mean that you actually went to see "Cold Mountain" or is this a prediction based on buzz? Because in that other Oscar predictions thread, you had no desire to see it.

I'll be surprised if "In America" is nominated for anything more than Screenplay and Song. No way will it get nominated for Picture and/or Director. It was an okay little movie, but way too low-key for such higher profile categories. I agree with most of your other nominees, though.

No, still haven't seen Cold Mountain, just a feeling I get. It has all the earmarks for multiple nominations. As for In America, I've got a feeling it'll get in for a couple of reasons. There's usually a dark-horse nomination and this one is my pick for that. Also, Jim Sheridan is well-respected and admired, having been nominated previously. But you're right, it's a longshot. Last Samurai, Master & Commander, or the House of Sand & Fog could easily land the 5th slot, though I think the other 4 nominees are more or less a sure thing.

I guess I should have said, what if you could vote for and choose the nominees....

Oh wait, I did say that.

Whatever way you wish to post it is fine by me... whether you think it will be or want it to be nominated. Perhaps you can just clarify as to which it is, wanted or what you think will be in your post.
