The Ring ... Scariest Movie I'd Ever Seen
#176
Just got my R2 copy of Ringu (just in time for Halloween!) and have to say it was very creepy and well done, though I like the U.S. version just a little bit more. The horse scene just freaks me out and overall it had just a little more tension to it (especially the opening scene).

Well, I took my daughter and two of her friends to this yesterday. They didn't want to sit with me, but 2 out of the 3 ended up sitting at least part of the time with me because they were scared.
What really freaked me out, was that there was a little kid sitting behind me (like 5 maybe, or 4 years old). This was a pretty scary movie for the 5th graders I took(10-11 years old), but at least they're almost in middle school and they went because they wanted to see it. I can't really see a preschool or kindergarten aged kid saying that they want to go see The Ring--I think his mom just couldn't find a babysitter.
I'd have thought he'd be scared, and he was sometimes, but at the climax of the movie, he said in a cheery voice

Oh, also, on a second viewing I noticed this. Not sure if I'm right or not, but

I dont remember that statement being directed solely at Anne, I think the doctor had stated she was hurting her mother, AND other people.
It was cool how the context of that sentence completely changed when we find out she is evil

man this thread just keeps on going...and going....and going.
on a side note - The Ring reclaimed the #1 spot on Halloween, increasing 109% from Wednesday. Jackass, which had been #1 since it's release last week, dropped to #3, right below Ghost Ship. I guess that's pretty practical for Halloween and scary movies.

I don't remember anyone answering this. So I'll ask it.
Where did Samara come from? They had a birth certificate for her, but the doctor on the island said something about everyone assuming she was adopted from somewhere. Did they give us any more clues aside from that that I missed.

I just watched this tonight, and I'd have to say it's one of the creepiest movies I've seen... I can't think of a movie that has given me the chills the way this one did... especially
Did I just miss it, or did this movie not have any opening titles beyond the Dreamworks logo?
I think I'll rent Frailty tomorrow, I hear that is pretty creepy too.
I must try to sleep now...

No it didn't have any opening credits. I first saw it as a sneak preview and there wern't any previews either, it just started with the two chicks talking... I thought it was an ad for Coke for a minute.
(at least what I picked up) Samara was their real daughter (as the birth certificate said). The island dr. said they tried repeatedly to have a baby and the mothers medical record listed many miscarrages. If you remember the father said, just before he killed himself, "She was never meant to be born."
I think fate (god, karma, whatever...) knew that whatever baby she was supposed to have would be this evil "thing". Which is why she kept losing it. i think the rich couple left the island and found some sort of specialist, circumventing fate and causing this evil to exist.
just my two cents.

While I watched, it reminded me of Halloween 3 and I though, there's going to be a sequel where the tape somehow ends up broadcast to millions of people and Naomi Watts will have to run around trying to save the world.
The movie is great for its atmosphere but I felt there was a whole lot of tension leading to minimal scares. Good movie though.

OK, I saw this movie yesterday. I've got the say this in my top 5 creepiest movie ever. I end up leaving the light on and my TV on the Playboy channel so I can sleep
A few comments:
- what's is with the son (Aiden)? Is he suppose to act, talk and look like that or the kid just can't act? Very misleading IMO
- love the twisted ending
- I can't believe how many members said they saw babies or little kids in theatre. There was a baby crying thru out the movie and saw quite a few kids under 10 there. This should not be a PG13... much more like a R movie.
- Naomi Watts is extremely HOT HOT HOT

i finally got around to seeing this and thought it was pretty forgettable. there were some chilling images, but it's certainly not "staying" with me like some other films have. i'm not jumping when the phone rings or anything. not anywhere close to my top 25 horror films, i suspect.
on another note, did anyone notice that the soundtrack had some similarities to the suspiria soundtrack? i was wondering if it was intentional, or if they even sampled directly from it, but i didn't stick around to see the end credits.

Hi, a poster brought this up a few pages back, but no one really seemed to have answered this----- Why is the "horse scene" so scary or eerie to you guys? I've seen this sentiment much at the Ring board I checked at a while ago. I just popped on to this thread here today, and many of you guys are saying the same thing. Even some of those who didn't find the film scary cited this scene-- why?

As a weird coincidence....Naomi Watts was just on Leno..
Anyway, even stranger....the "horse scene" was the clip they showed. It was almost shown in its entirety, and it's even shorter than I remember. I still don't get the big deal, unless I severely underestimated the amount of horse adoring film goers.
I do have to say how it looks when the horse rears up, such a great shot.

i didn't find the horse scene creepy or scary. i just thought it was really well done. something about it was just striking. can't explain it.
that's kind of how i felt about the movie as a whole. i didn't find it that scary. a scary movie to me is one when i leave the theater at night and think things are gonna jump out of the bushes at me... but i do think the movie was very well done. striking images. nice twist ending.
i just didn't get the kid. what was so special about him that he could talk to this girl? that made it seem almost like the sixth sense.
also, when i saw it in the theater, everyone let out a collective groan at the scene near the end... "how long do you think she could survive down there?" "seven days"
groan....
