In the Loop (Iannucchi, 2009): British political comedy w/ Steve Coogan & Gandolfini

Plot Summary:
Political comedy looks at what might go on behind closed doors in London and Washington in the lead-up to a not-so-fictional war in the Middle East.

Not enough Coogan...And the trailer didn't do much for me.

The US trailer is truer to the actual tone of the movie versus the original international trailer.

I wound up enjoying this movie a great deal more than I expected. Very funny, profane and generally very well paced, a line here or there comes off as forced but most of it plays out very well.

It reminded me a bit of Burn After Reading (the whole "this is a non-event" aspect) crossed with Arrested Development (and of course Strangelove). One of the better movies I've seen this year.

I watched this a couple of months ago, and loved it. To one-up Lastdays, I would place In the Loop in my top two of the year, and it's easily one of the best comedies of the past decade. I don't remember laughing as hard as I did during a movie since I watched Dr. Strangelove.

Re: In the Loop (Iannucchi, 2009): British political comedy w/ Steve Coogan & Gandolf

I saw this quite a while ago and its a great movie (in the very loosest sense). I think its much better to have seen "The Thick of It" before seeing this though as you get to be familiar with the characters and it helps. As for Coogan.....well he has been making far too many mis-steps with his role choices in recent years, so i was happy to only have a little of him here. Bring on an Alan Partridge movie and i will be interested again.

Oh, and the scene in this movie with Gandolfini in the kids room working out troops figures on a kids play calculator i just find very funny in itself.

Finally got around to seeing this. One of the smartest and funniest comedies of the past few years. With this and "Burn After Reading," David Rasche had a fantastic year.

Can't believe I haven't talked about this here yet. In this or any other thread. Yes...it is a fantastic film! And one of 2009's best. I actually saw it on a Virgin Altantic flight back from the U.K. last June and was howling the whole time.

Looks like fun. Is this out on a limited release only?

Well it's now on DVD/Blu. It did have a small theatrical run here in the States.

Definitely recommend picking up The Thick of It if you like the film.... it's not required to see before the film though (only Malcolm is the same character in the film/series). I got the HMV UK-exclusive set a while back for 10 quid with Series 1/2 and the Specials.

It actually just hit DVD and Blu-ray the other week. Watched it the other day and absolutely loved it. I need to watch it a second time as the film moves at such a quick pace (probably due to the constant, non-stop, rapid-fire dialogue) that I feel I missed a few things.

The film also contains one of the greatest cinematic quotes known to man.

Spoiler:
"Y'know, I've come across a lot of psychos, but none as fucking boring as you. You are a real boring fuck. Sorry, sorry, I know you disapprove of swearing so I'll sort that out. You are a boring F, star, star, ****!"

Jamie is another character from the series who made it into the film (and who absolutely tears it up during his five minutes of screen time).

I've got the Blu.

It's very dry and Brit, but very good.

Finally got around to seeing this. Any film that features the term "arse-spraying mayhem" in a Scottish accent gets a huge from me. And, frankly, I've always had a bit of a Gina McKee crush.

A very, very funny film. I suspect the sort of untidy ending was a bit of a turn-off for American audiences.

Honestly, I found The Thick of It to be significantly funnier than In The Loop.

Thanks Daniel. I just looked "The Thick of It" up, not knowing what it was. I had no idea "Loop" was a feature spin off from a UK TV show. I'm on it!

I didn't know either, but my roommate is a British TV fiend and he showed me some of the episodes when we were both disappointed by In The Loop.
