Best Film of 1973 (ongoing survey)

A quick note:
  • Some people are now saying it's before their time, so they haven't seen enough to vote... If you've seen even one film that you really liked from the year, and thus you consider it the best you've seen (even if it's the only one you've seen), go ahead and vote. Heck, I was born in '82, so yeah, it's before my time too, but I've still got a favorite from most years back at least through the 70s, even if I've just seen 2 or 3 from the year.

I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative.

This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1973 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice.

Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun.

Please start your post with your #1 film from 1973 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome!

Very tough call for me, but I gotta give the slight edge to:

1) The Day of the Jackal - 8/10
2) The Exorcist - 8/10
3) Sisters - 8/10
4) Last Tango in Paris - 7/10
5) Mean Streets - 7/10
6) American Graffiti - 7/10
7) Robin Hood - 7/10
8) Cries and Whispers - 7/10

The only other film from that year that I've seen is Papillon (which contrary to most critical opinion, I detested) - 2/10

Note - both Cries and Whispers and Last Tango in Paris are listed on the imdb as '72 films, but they were both nominated for Oscars in '74, thus '73 films.

Siskel:
1) The Emigrants / The New Land
2) Last Tango in Paris
3) The Exorcist
4) Cries and Whispers
5) The Day of the Jackal
6) The Last of Sheila
7) The Day of the Dolphin
8) American Graffiti
9) Sisters
10) The Long Goodbye

Ebert:
1) Cries and Whispers
2) Last Tango in Paris
3) The Emigrants / The New Land
4) Blume in Love
5) The Iceman Cometh
6) The Exorcist
7) The Day of the Jackal
8) American Graffiti
9) Fellini's Roma
10) The Friends of Eddie Coyle

The Long Goodbye

Definitely Altman's most underappreciated film.

Tough year with The Sting, Paper Moon, The Exorcist and American Graffiti all being top contenders along with a great film nobody saw, Bang the Drum Slowly.

I threw my metaphorical dart at the board and it hit The Exorcist.

without a doubt Badlands.
a great film debut by the amazing Terrence Malick.

I just rewatched this film this past weekend coincidentally and subsequently purchased three volumes of Carl Orff's music.

Live and Let Die

I'm sure there are better, but oddly I've barely seen any movies from 1973, of those I've seen this is the only one I've rewatched and enjoyed everytime...
