Grave of the Fireflies. Brothers Quay Collection.

Parts of Goodfellas, Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast, and Se7en.

I have Bullet in the Head (John Woo) on order.

How about "The Deer Hunter"? It might be one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen.

Requiem for a Dream is quite an odd movie. Not only in the sense of the content, but the fact that I still feel pained watching characters that I don't care for. Let's face it, it's hard to care about deadbeats when in the end
Spoiler:
they still remain deadbeats but in a worse situation.
But even despite this, the director uses so many tricks to pound the idea of sadness and desperation into the audience's skulls, that it really doesn't matter who the story is about.

I found American Beauty to be on the happy side of the emotional spectrum.
Spoiler:
Even though Lester gets it in the end, one has to realize that those days after questioning his being were the most fufilling days of his life. He recaptured the quality of life and died with a smile on his face. Pretty damn satisfying if you ask me.

Recently I saw Dead Man. That had a few fun disturbing scenes (I have a bit of a twisted sense of humor). The randomness of that movie was offbeat, which I can imagine might trouble some audience members.

I hated Dancer in the Dark. Found nothing disturbing about it. We had to see it for film class, and all of us were just itching to get out of there, and the ending is a joke among us now(I can see why some people would like it, and see the neat things about how it was made, but I hated the movie).

The most disturbing movie and I don't own it nor do I think its on DVD is The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover. From riding in the wagon full of rotten meat naked, to eating the dog ****, to the cannibalism, to the boy with his vocal chords cut out, to us actually seeing a guy eat another guy that had been glazed in an over with a fork, its a rough movie.

The Lust scene freaked me out the most in Se7en.

But I would have to say that Greenaway takes the cake. I haven't seen Requim or a good deal of the others mentioned, but our film teacher had, and she thought Greenaway's film was one of the worst.

For every one who is saying Wickerman I just laugh at you all I saw this movie and the only thing "troubling" about it is I spent over $25 on it how is this movie troubling? I sat thru this movie thinking is this a hippie propaganda movie? I bought it on a blind buy. As Simpsons comic book guy would say Worst...blindbuy ...ever (please contact me if you want to buy it!)

Now for my picks:

Permanent Midnight (holy rock bottom Batman!)
Session 9 (just not right)
Crash (you got to see it to believe it)
Requiem for a Dream (if you have ever done drugs it makes you think)
8mm (same reason everyone else is saying)
Se7en (the guy who wrote this is not right in the head)

I find very few american films disturbing. most of any good stuff ends up on cutting room floors do to the fact that so many here just cant handle it. at least thats what they say. for "disturbing", I'll stick with japan:
  • The Untold Story 1 & 2
  • Daughter of Darkness
  • Guinea Pig Titles(all)
  • Men Behind the Sun(all)

there are also many fine "twisted" titles from germany. other various favs, some closer to home:
  • House on the Edge of the Park
  • Cannibal Holocaust

....oh..and House on Dead-End Street is a personal fav.

ugh.
Nekromantik is a classic. Nekromantik 2 is eh.. But you want distrubing watch Jörg Buttgereit's other film Der Todesking, disturbing scenes in that one.

I hear Schramm is good too, though haven't seen it yet.

Requiem definitely is a disturbing film, but I love it anyway!

Another one I own--How about M?? THAT's up there too somewhere, I'm sure!

The scene in Traffic when a 17-year-old Caroline is having sex with a drug dealer is pretty hard to watch.

I own this and love it. I guess I have a twisted brain because it's not that disturbing. to the general public though...I'm sure a penis nailed to a board would be a bit rough. same for Nekromantik....the gore content was low...but sex with the dead is never pretty.
