MrHan posted this in the regular HD forum. Which makes me wonder - we're all Region A, right? So I guess this is appropriate in either forum. Excited nonetheless. My copy's already shipped from dddhouse.

Any chance someone could update this thread once they get a chance to review ?? Really tempted to pick this one up. The first IP man blu from HK was a bit of a mixed bag for me.

Re: Ip Man 2 (6/25/10) HK BD/DVD
I received it yesterday and pretty much watched all of it, including extras. As a whole, this second story focuses on three parts; Ip Man's school and the students, Ip Man's acceptance with the other martial arts masters, and the western style boxing (and the assholes) who come in and pretty much play the heavy racist card. As much as I enjoyed the fight sequences (the market and martial arta masters sequences are damn good), I felt that missing personal investment that Ip Man dealt with in the first one. I'll assume most have already seen the first, but if you remember the sequence where he fought the 10 guys because of what happened to his friend, you don't really get that in this one. Comparatively, it seems that there was less of a personal story involved, but more just laying out the sequence of events. Which is not bad really. The production value is definitely there, and seeing the entire cast is really nice, even the character of Jin - the guy who fights Ip Man in his house in the first film is back, and in a very surprising way. And for those wondering,
But the Universe release is as good as the first in terms of audio and video, the 7.1 DTS-HD track is very nice end enveloping. The picture quality is just as good. Extras has 4 deleted scenes, a premiere montage, interviews, trailers, and one called 4 Big Scenes, which shows the main fight sequences and how they filmed it. I guess overall, if I had to rate both films, I'd give Ip Man 9/10, and Part 2 7/10.

Just ordered it with regular shipping. Anyone who has bought from HK with regular shipping know how long it usually takes to get to the west coast?

For those wondering, the DVD version says "Region 3" on the back of the case, but it is in fact Region Free, like part 1.

There are some grammar mistakes in the English subtitles, not all that much, but it's amazing with the English dialogue.
There's a fair amount of British English (by Australian actors, no less) and the subtitles don't match what they say at times.... someone wasn't listening carefully.

Ok, my take on the movie, first the flaws:
1. Doesn't have enough conflict as the first
2. The British (played mostly by Australians) bad dialogue and non-threatening power
3. The conflict between Ip Man and the other martial arts masters are over and done very quickly in the story
4. Simon Yam's character was wasted, and didn't have any impact
5. Siu Wong Fan's character comes back, and that was great, but he didn't have a single fight scene! His fights in the first were great! A waste again.
6. Ip Man's wife being pregnant didn't really put the emotional strength towards the end when necessary, I think.
7. What was with Bruce Lee in it for a second as a child? I hope it is to further the story with part 3, but Donnie Yen already expressed that he doesn't want to do a third film.
Even with all this, 6 out of 10 for the film.
It was very nicely shot, the fight scenes were great, although I'd prefer the first film's fight scenes though. It's still worth watching and crossing fingers for Donnie Yen to change his mind....
But that's not all with Ip Man.
Last month, ANOTHER Ip Man film was released in China (Ip Man: Legend of a Master), with Sammo Hung in this one too!
Also, Wong Kar Wai's film about Ip Man is on its way too! Finally! Supposedly coming out at the end of the year.

It seems the Kar Wai version takes the story beyond Ip Man 2. There is an older version of Bruce Lee in it. Here's a music video by Kar Wai starring the guy playing Bruce Lee.

I like Part 2 slighty better. Or at least in the same league as the first one. I don't care about the story or whatsoever, i judge it solely based on my satisfaction in watching.

This movie started out well enough, but then it turns into Rocky III and gets really lame - could've done without the whole British/boxing thing. Really well-shot and a good looking blu-ray though.
