Watching the trailer now, at least I see I was reasonably accurate in my attempted phonetics.

And I think the folks at the Korean grocery were at least a little impressed that I knew something about Korean films...so I can take solace in that.

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

I saw Always Sunset on Third and I felt it was a middling movie, neither good nor bad. I wouldn't say the acting was great nor horrible. The movie was like a light comedy and appropriate like comic actors act in a tv sitcom. I felt the actress Koyuki, (best known in America from the Last Samurai) acted well as hers was the serious role.

I personally liked the sequel much better. Better story and character focused.

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

the English-subtitled GOEMON DVD is out right now and I bought it yesterday. It's the "type" of dvd that will probably be sold at hkflix.com soon. The video quality is anamorphic with Dolby Digital 5.1 Japanese, with English or Spanish subtitles. The video is okay, not as good as the original Japanese DVD. It slightly looks pixilated during dark scenes.

Obayashi's cult horror/comedy HOUSE is coming out in January on DVD in the UK. This movie looks awesome!

Ichi (the female take on Zatoichi) was pretty good - the UK blu-ray looks fantastic, is all-region and can be had for around $10.

13: GAME OF DEATH is quite a creepy film. Worth seeing for its dynamic direction and very original concept with regard to what some people will do when they're in financial straights. Eventually I want to see TOKYO SONATA because of its critical success and noteworthy director.

I love watching reactions from people when they see that one particular scene. You know which one I'm referring to.

I'm watching the Blu right now, what an amazing visual film. This looks terrific, the version I'm watching.

Cool seeing so many big stars in it too.

I'm a sucker for this stuff, and so many historical characters.

[off thread topic] Depending on how one feels about that, make sure to either include or cross off Water's Pink Flamingos from the list. The "puckered starfish" scene just about blew my mind out of the water. I've seen some unreal stuff in films before but Pink Flamingos could be the most over the top and gratuitously offensive film I've ever seen based on the sheer quantity of questionable elements. Well, alright, Visitor Q could be the other one.[/off thread topic]

Saw TOKYO SONATA at the 2008 NY Film Festival - terrific movie, and one I can't wait to get on DVD.

No bonus extras. However, the R2UK 2-Disc DVD is loaded with extras but rather expensive.

R2UK (Blu-ray-Region Free) available from Eureka for £10.99 free shipping included.

Oh yea, Pink Flamingos is also the scene where she/she gives a bj to his/her own son. Sorry this is off topic.

I'd guess that a lot of folks have a high level of interest in seeing this one...Director Johnnie To's Vengeance is coming out on Hong Kong DVD/Blu-ray on the 11th of this month.

I watched ACCIDENT just the other night and found it to be rather mid-range and thus a letdown as I had anticipated better. I thought the basic concept behind the movie was certainly impressive, but found the execution rather lacking. From what I've seen of Director Soi Cheang's work, LOVE BATTLEFIELD is still my clear favorite.

Almost forgot to mention it...Hong Kong's Oscar submission - PRINCE OF TEARS - is releasing on English-friendly HK DVD on the 15th of this month.

I'm going to pick up VENGEANCE, the HK DVD of THE MESSAGE...and maybe too PRINCE OF TEARS and REBELLION.
