Thanks, I will. I will also PM you on the other forum with my review of the Momitsu in a couple of weeks, after I put it through its paces a bit more.

Oh, I will also post here as well. I just owe Dr. A since he was very helpful in my decision to purchase the player.

May I ask where You purchased it from? This player is high on my list - but I'm trying to find a deal on it. Thanks!

HKFlix. $349 + shipping. They offer to match any price, not that I've seen it lower.

Re: Region-Free BD Player: Momitsu BDP-899?

i'm interested in the review too. If this player is solid performer for upscaled dvd playback as well as the multiregion blu ray capabilities, I will probably just bite the bullet.

Re: Region-Free BD Player: Momitsu BDP-899?

I won't have a chance to perform any critical analysis this week (one son going to China, the other graduating). But by this weekend, I intend to A-B it against my Oppo 983 for SD. I already know that it's a solid BD player from what I've seen (so nice to be BD region-free!).

Re: Region-Free BD Player: Momitsu BDP-899?

After mulling it over for weeks and weeks, I finally ordered the Momitsu this morning. Thanks, Ted, for all your comments and info here and at other forums. My first Region B locked Blu on order is "Shallow Grave".

I'll pick this up once we start seeing some more classic titles (Moc's Sunrise is a good start)

This is a definite consideration for me.

Thanks Ted. At the risk of sounding like a traitor (on this thread), I finally decided to go with the Panasonic this week.
It was a tough choice. Get the Momitsu & have one player that plays ALL my discs, or keep my DVD player for PAL DVD's and DIVX discs & stack two machines.
I went with the latter cos I know nothing about Momitsu. I know no one (personally) who owns any of their units, and have no idea how well it'll work or how long it'll last for the money. That coupled with the fact that no brick & mortar stores seem to sell this, and I don't like the idea of entrusting delicate electronics to my local joke of a Post Office.
...So I'm stacking the BD-60 (got a great deal on it) on top of the DVD player. Hope I made a wise choice.

But how are you going to play multi-region BDs?

I think he meant a modded Panasonic. The Panny will not play PAL extras on import BDs however, unless you have a PAL-capable display (no PAL->NTSC converter). Momitsu has been around for many years and were one of the first companies to manufacture a region-free DVD player. Their 880 was a very popular unit.

Mine arrived via FedEx and I had to sign for it. The driver was very careful in handling the box.

The delicate electronics that arrive at B&M's every day have gashes, holes and dents in their boxes from what I've seen so you never know what that package went through before arriving at the store.

cracksky,

May I ask if you got yours from HKFlix, and if so, when did you place your order?

Mine is still sitting as "processing". . .

Yes, from HK. Ordered in early May. Arrived in just under a month after waiting for new stock from Momitsu.

Re: Region-Free BD Player: Momitsu BDP-899?

Thank you for the reply. It would be helpful if the HKFlix site noted if the product was in stock or not! Someone on another forum ordered this week, too, and it was deducted from his bank balance, so hopefully it's almost out the door.

I got weekly e-mail updates on the progress. The site currently say ships same day if in stock but not whether it's in stock. Assume not but you should get updates.

Well if they're truly multi-region, it shouldn't matter. If You mean standard def PAL extras on other region Blu's, I don't currently own any. Guess I'll have to cross that bridge when I come to it.

Sorry, I meant non-region A discs.

Re: Region-Free BD Player: Momitsu BDP-899?

The Momitsu shipped yesterday. I'm really looking forward to it. (They didn't provide a FedEX number yet, though, which would be helpful.)

Tracking # comes in a separate e-mail from FedEx.

I've yet to buy a non region A BluRay so, as I said, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
I really don't pretend to understand the tech or business decisions the studios make, but it seems the whole PAL/NTSC thing doesn't apply to BR the way it did to DVD. Plus it appears most of the region B discs I would be interested in are actually region free.
According to this site anyway...
